As I get closer to moving my ST16's off the cabin top to the coaming, I've been wondering what size winch I need to replace the 16's with. The main use of the replacement will be to raise the main. Other than that, they will be for looks so I don't think I need anything high dollar. The other concern will be trying to find replacements that have a similar base size so the mounting holes of the removed ST16s don't show on the edges of the newly installed ones. What size/kind have others used to replace your cabin top winches with?

Why do you need to replace the cabin top winches?

Wouldn't a well placed snatch block enable you to still use the winch that will now be on the coaming? In fact, maybe a pair of snatch block on pads that cover the cabin top holes would be the perfect place for them....

Left the 16ST's on the cabin top, added 14ST's on the coaming. Makes single handling much easier as everything can be controlled behind the wheel. Now for a cooler behind the wheel! Also a major quest - redesign the galley for serious cooking with comfort aw well as functionality in mind.

Tom, If you know anyone with some teak......You could make a teak pad to cover up holes from a new smaller winch.

I saw on the forum somebody put cam cleats at the end of their genoa tracks .
nice mod holds the jib sheat so you can free the winch to tighten the main halyard or cunningham.

so many projects maybe winter is too short !

ya right

Yea, teak... I might know someone who has some....

Was hoping to get this project done before BEER.

I've been doing house (kitchen) work for the last 3 weeks. New Tile floors and Corian counter tops. Tonight the wife officially gave me the okay to pursue boat projects.

Tom,

I bought Lewmar 14ST's, chrome for the coaming winches. They are 1" shorter (height)than the 16ST's. For the 14ST, drum diam. 2 9/16", base 4 3/4", and height 4 3/4".

About the best deal I've found so far is at Catalina Direct, a little Marelon winch for $61.49. Has anyone used these before? I'm planning to use it for main halyard, no sheets.

those are not self tailing you would need a cleat to hold the line . If you put them cabin top you could use the spin locks for the halyards . what will you do for the jib sheets ?

I want to take the 16st I have now off the cabin top and put them on the coaming and use them for the jib sheets. (I will have to get longer sheets) This way I can tack single handily without having to use the tiller pilot of some other rig to hold the rudder. I was looking to replace the 16st I take off the cabin top with the little marelins and use them for the Main Halyard. Since the main halyard runs through the deck clutch I wouldn't need the cleat. I could get by without replacing the 16s but though it would look better if I put something back up on the cabin top. (and to cover the holes that the 16s are going to leave).
