Well Sunday I went up to the boat and got the boom off of the boat. I had read a post talking about upgrading the outhaul on the boom. I took two blocks and some new line, and I thought that this would be a easy job to do while waiting to race in two weeks. I got the boom home and got started on it last night. The ends were attached with two screws so I took these off first. The line I used was a 1/4" Stra Set by New England Ropes. I had called the local West Marine to see if they had the blocks I needed, and of course they didn't, My other store I shop at is right down the street from our home Boaters World, So I just went there thinking i could get something close to what was suggested. I got a Single block with becket 30mm and a double block with a fixed 90 degree loop. I was really wanting the Harken Carbo Block but they only carry Lewmar and Ronstan. All of the Lewmar stuff was 60mm and way to big so Ronstan it was. I stood there for about 30 min thinking of the rigging and how I would attach it inside the boom. At last I got the two blocks and 35' of the 1/4" line. Tonight I took everything apart. I spent a good hour trying to take out two cotter pins in the end of the boom next to the gooseneck. After that was out I started pulling the old line out while running the new line. I use rigging tape to tape both ends together. After this was done it was all put back together and seemed like a really good upgrade. Before it was a 2to1 system now its a 6to1. I am planning on maybee upgrading the cleat to hold the line, I might just put a cam cleat on the boom. I don't like the idea of outting that much weight on a cam cleat so I might just keep what is there right now. I will post a drawing of what I did tomorrow and give # of the hardware I used.
Chris, My outhaul has 2 harken 228's inside the boom. one is pinned in place part way down. The other 228 is attached to the wire that coonects to the outhaul casting after it goes around a sheave. Not sure what that makes the purchase, but it works well. The casting that attached to the sail is worn, you haven't found a replacement for that have you?
Rick, The Catalina Capri 22 I think uses the same boom, I would call Catalina Direct, or Catalina to find out. Here is a drawing of what I did. I dont know if it will make any difference or not but at least the lines are replaced.
