Can anyone provide me with a sq ft value for paint coverage needed to paint the bottom of a C-25? Also, what size winch is recommended for the trailer?
Thanks! Jim
CP25 #183 - Team Short Bus Capri25 Measurer 2007(ish)-2010 Douse: [dous] v, a: to lower or take in suddenly; b: to stow quickly; c: ease, with vigor --- Regret is the bastard child of desire and inaction.
I used 1 gal. on the bottom of the Capri 25, Two Coats. As far as the winch size I bought a 6000lb winch for the front of the trailer. Does this mean you found a boat?
WOW, a 6,000lb winch on the trailer? The whole boat weighs less than 3,000 doesn't it? Or is that a 600lb winch?
Might be. Went to look at it on Monday, needs a fair amount of work but the price is reasonable. Most of the work is minor, tho the bottom needs some serious attention. I'm trying to determine how much adtl $ I would have to put into it to be ready for spring.
What do you (or others) use to charge your battery?
I also charge the battery at home during the winter time. During the Summer I have a small 5w Solar panel that I use to keep it topped off. I also have it wired directly to 2 12v fans so I can throw the solar panel up on deck and get free air down below. I have a wind, speed, and depth guages, and a cd radio. As for the winch I used a 2000. lb winch for the reason that we launch our boats from a ramp, and have to use a trailer extention. The boat weighs 2750 dry with nothing in it, by the time sails, battery, motor, sheets, lines halyards, tools, and life devices get on board we are right around 3000. If you saw my trailer you would know why I have it, but to make you feel better, the first time the boat went on the trailer we didn't use a winch at all. We used a 3/8" line and tied some loops in it to make a 6 to 1 purchace, we then tied this around the trailer hitch and pulled it tight. Needless to say the boat was up on the trailer, but I did manage to rip off the forward plastic cleat. This would be my first thing I would buy for the boat if yours will have plastic ones. http://www.boatersworld.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&catalogId=10051&langId=-1&productId=13208780 Bottom paint/repair
Our boats bottom needed paint and some repair done to it, All boats do. I spent 75.00 on West marine Bottom Pro, The boat was on a mooring when launched and I didn't want to spend 200.00 in paint on the bottom. VC17 goes for 40.00 per quart you will need 3 to 4 cans. As far as prep work, and getting the boat faired, I got a buddy of mine to help out, We sanded the boat for a full day, starting with 80 grit and finishing up with 320. I used 2 coats of the WM Stuff. I Pulled the boat up on the hoist 3 weeks ago and the algee just slid off the bottom, the guy at the club said he had never seen a bottom paint work like this stuff. I will be putting VC17 or VIVID on the bottom the comming up year. To paint the boat took another day, I was by myself, the hardest part is getting the bottom under the keel. So in short, it should take you 2 to 4 days of 8 hours, minus the beer and bull. Remember just to take your time and have some fun.
Thanks for the info! Every boat I've had to date (even my Precision 21) has had some kind of charger on the engine, so I'm not used to much in the way of battery management, was always topped off. Sounds like for basic use (instruments, CD, etc) that a decent solar panel should do the job. Do you use any kind of overcharge protection on the 5w panel?
This boat has the "plastic" cleats, and the aft horn is broken off both sides of the bow cleats, so will need to be replaced. One of the things on the minor-issues list.
The 2k-lb winch should do the trick nicely, thanks for the info!
VC17 is what I'm considering using on the bottom. A friend of mine has that on his C-250, seems to work very well. Hmmm, 2-4 days PLUS beer and bull. I can work and bull at the same time, but I suspect I better budget some adtl time for the beer. I refuse to do manual labor w/o beer. :)
The solar panel has a regulator that I bought for it, so when the battery is fully charged, it wont reverse tha process. I guess thats how it works. We also have shore power at the docks so I might upgrade to a inline charger. The little 4hp motor I have does not have a alternator, so the solar charger works for me, I had it on our San Juan 24, and took it off when I sold her. I bought the cleats from Catalina Direct, They where a good 1/4" off so I reversed them up front and filled the holes with 5200. Take a cleat off and go to a local marine store and get the right size. I think I paid 12.00 for both. I would do VC17 or VIVID for racing, Its the best, Vivid has come a long way in bottom paint, and I have my own thoughts about the VC17, If the boat is on the trailer when launching the VC will come off on the runners, The stuff goes on like water, I am really leaning towards the VIVID. Its a so called Hard Epoxy bottom paint with some kind of ablative properties. Well it sounds like you might have found a boat, and its seems to be close to you.
Thanks for all the great info, I'm *really* looking forward to summer now!
Yep, found a boat! :D Local, only had to traverse the N and W sides of town, not the whole country. Nice to have a boat on the RV pad again, it was looking rather empty back there...
It needs some minor work, but looks good structurally. Bottom paint is #1 priority, the rest can be accomplished from the slip if necessary. Apparent good sail selection, once I tossed out the two old jibs found in the laz' that were torn and moldy... (maybe used for padding on the deck?)
More questions: 1. Where the dataplate located with the hull/serial #? 2. What's the minimum HP required to meet PHRF (90% hull speed)?

Will check again tonight. Dont have pics at the office, but will try to log on tonight and post some.
Bottom needs serious work, prior paint was flaking off (neglect). I started sanding with 80g (at the recommendation of one of the local boat shops) with an orbital, but VERY slow word (there appears to be 4-5 coats). Thinking about going to a belt sander.
