I am planning to buy a Honda 8HP or 9.9HP outboard motor for my 2003 C250. I want to know if the long shaft is just a good or better than the ultra long shaft on either motor or which one works well...or the best for my sailboat?
Steve, I have a 2005 or 06 (dending on the DMV) C250. I bought the Honda 9.9 long shaft with some kind of thruster and it seems to be fine. I sail on a lake and do a have any chop. The ultra shaft may be of some consideration to people on the ocean.
I recently bought a Honda 9.9 xls for my C250 WB, replacing a Evinrude long shaft. I like the depth of the Honda much better, even for inland lake sailing that I'm doing. The boat seems to handle much better with the extra long shaft ... and motors a bit faster. The Honda 9.9 is an impressive outboard so far and I'm very satisfied with its performance, even with the BUs spent for it.
I have a Mercury 8 hp 4 stroke with the long shaft. This issue was a major pain for me prior to my purchase of the WK since I already owned the engine. If I had to do it over again I would go with the XLS shaft. However I have not had any 'real' problems as of yet. I got caught out in a summer squall with winds measured to 50 mph and the motor stayed in the water. As a matter of fact I was quite surprised when the first gust came over the port rail and the boat did NOT even try to dip the rail in the water! I have had problems when I was the only one on board and went forward with the engine idling in neutral, the motor did come out of the water hence the desire for the longer shaft. My boat has the factory installed SS outboard bracket exptension.
