On my new C250WK, should I order the asy spinaker (says 3/4 oz Poleless Cruising Spinaker with Gear). According to dealer, comes with everything you need to use (rigging, etc.) but no sock.

My stage of sailing: I don't even know HOW to fly a spinaker, even a cruising spinaker. But over time I would like to. Should I get the factory option now (for $1700) or do something aftermarket later?

thanks,

Kevin

Later,You'll have enough to do for at least a year just getting use to the new boat.

I agree, there's no downside to waiting. See how you use the boat and how frequently you have experienced crew along.

I purchased an Asym from Air Force Sails this summer. It is a nice sail, and the sail (w/ no gear) was ~ $600. Lines and blocks cost another $200 or so. I try to use it every chance I get (I need the practice), but I find that the majority of the time when I'm sailing either the wind is too strong, or I don't have the people on board to permit me to fly the asym. I consider myself an intermediate sailor w/ six years sailing keelboats. In order to fly the asym I need at least one and preferably two other sailors with at least some knowledge (running sheets, rolling up genoa, raising and trimming asym). Otherwise the hassle factor outweighs the improved boat performance.

So don't spend unnecessary boat bucks on an option that you may use only rarely. If in the future you have a person or two with whom you sail regularly and you want to try the assym you can set yourself up for under $1000.

I vote for the pass as well. If you decide later on, you can buy one for less than 1000 with everything. Check out cruisingdirect.com for prices. You will see a cat25 on their home-page. That is me!. I have no affiliation with them however. Just a satisfied customer.

Tom.
