Yow! I was lurking in Tomahawk Bay marina in Portland today, and saw a C250 with mainsail roller furling (furls vertically, just like jib). I could not see how they handled battens, etc.
Does anyone know who owns this boat, or have info on such a system? I realize there are some real compromises with using it, but I would like to learn more about it...
Thanks,
Kevin

I just purchased a similar one, I didn't know there was another one in the area. My boat is a 95, new to me, so I'm still experimenting. I want to teach the grandkids sailing, so I liked the ease of sail handling; setting and furling the main and the jib can all be done from the cockpit. So far, I like the way the boat handles, but I don't know yet how it perfoms against 250's with a standard sail plan.
The sail is loose footed, of course, but it draws well on a beat. The only thing I've noticed is that the furling rod bends slightly, which might open the luff a bit.
If I uunderstand this post correctly the main furls into the mast, which would negate the use of battens - normally. Doyle sails makes a main with vertical battens for this type of furling main. I haven't heard any reports on performance but anything is better than a battenless main.
Actually, (and making harder for me to understand how it works well), the system I saw is a "behind the mast" furler. So the main furls on what is probably a solid vertical rod installed just aft of the mast. It looks a lot like a jib roller furler.
