Okay, it helps to have one of those West Marine $15 coupons laying around. WM has these fans on sale, so with the $15 coupon the fan came to $1.59 Cool! Popped the hand hole cover off, drilled 2 holes for screws to mount the fan and one hole for the wire to run through. I ran the wire back to the aft cabin light behind the liner and spliced it in. The project took me about 30 minutes to do. The fan tilts and turns to where you want it.
I like it! We replaced one of the "spotlights" above the table with that same fan model several years ago. It made a huge difference in the air movement below decks. I particularly like that the fan folds up to the cabin top when not in use.
I liked the fan so much, I went out and got another while they were on sale. I mounted it on the head bulkhead next to the light and tapped into the light wiring for power.
Capt Kurt, I picked up the 3 plug adapter at a local car parts store. If you get one watch out for the kind that has a "Low Battery voltage shut off function". This functions senses voltage drop, when the plug senses a drop in voltage below 12 volts it kills the power to plug to prevent the battery voltage from dropping to low to start a car. What ever I plugged in would run for a while then the plug adapter would do its job and kill the power. I took apart the plug adapter and disconnected that function.
Great idea for the aft berth Tom! I did the same as Cathy and mounted a pair over the table - tapping into the wiring for the "spotlights". They're so quiet and only draw 0.3 amps each.
I like this installation so much I have purchased the same fan. My question is: "How does the hand hole cover come off? Does it unscrew or do you pry it out with a screwdriver blade?"
My cover is sitting slightly crooked in its hole and I don't want to break it.
Bubba, off topic, but the table in your cabin does not look much like ours. Could you provide some good pics of the table (top bottom, etc.) Our table is practically useless, heavy, huge, and take two to setup. It's now in the garage (not for use either!)
Your's appers to be rectangular and smaller, so I'm curious.
And Tom, those curtains look great, got any pics / description of their installation?
