This weekend I modified the v-berth hold cover, you know, that huge white piece of 1/2" ply that you have to shift out the way to get access to the space under the V-berth.
It is now cut for-n-aft with a piano hinge holding it together, and a couple of hand holds routed near the port and stbd edge, they become one when the panel is folded. It allows for either side of the panel to be raised independant of the other.
Accessing the space is now a breeze, and moving the panel out of the way completely is literally a fraction of the effort.
So whoever thought of this orignally, thanks for a great idea. It has turned a useless piece of hull space into a valuable storage area. Catalina should follow your idea here. It makes so much sense. The original design with the handhold cut out in the aft edge of the supporting fiberglass was practically useless.
Thanks again... (who posted the original idea?)
Other jobs done this weekend include.. Mounting my new magazine rack (and stacking it with a couple of Boat US, and Mainsheet magazines, plus my copy of the US Boaters Course book. Also completed the comfort upgrade to the V-Berth. This involves a 1&1/2" memory foam mattress topper and a mattress support that fits across the gap between the two cabin seat lockers. The support is a piece of 1/4" ply shaped with a cut-out to fit around the mast compression post. The board is stored under the fwd bench cushion, and pulled aft to use. I have a 2" block of wood (wrapped in my favorite color duct tape to prevent scratching the table) that is used to support the aft edge of the board from the table. Initial try out verdict is that the v-berth is much more comfortable. We're preparing for a 4 day trip in October in the keys (key largo area) and wanted to be enjoy a bit more comfort overnight.
Thanks Wayne, it was Arlyn Stewart. Details of his many mods are on his website.
The only difference I made to Arlyn's mod on the hold cover was to put the piano hinge on edge. I marked and cut the board, mounted the two halves side by side in my workmate vice, then drilled and screwed the hinge to the edge. So you only see the butt of the hinge when the panel is in the closed position. I routed out hand holds instead of finger holes.
Going back to Arlyn's website, I'm now looking at his table mod, we really need a viable table in the cabin that will also allow us to use the V-Berth for sleeping. I'm 6' and need the space :)
Arlyn has some great ideas on his site. This forum is an awesome resource, thanks!
