After I refinished my dinghy oars, I noticed one of the oar collars is starting to rip apart (the black rubber piece which keeps the oar from sliding all the way through the brass oarlock).
As replacements, many places sell oar leathers/buttons, which would probably look nicer than rubber collars. However, I'm thinking of making the leathers instead by tightly wrapping thin rope around the oars and putting a Turk's Head on the top end of the oar rope-wrap (to act as the "button").
Using nylon or dacron cord works very well. I have had this set up on some oars for close to 20 years. My buttons were simply a piece of line saturated in epoxy but the epoxy finally disintegrated so I am looking for a new approach. I think I got the idea from Dynamite Payton's book on Instant Boats.
The turk's head should work better. You should soak the cords in spar varnish and renew from time to time.
