While ghosting on this forum for a while and reading all the archives I can find, I am left with this situation: I have been sailing on Lake Lanier near Atlanta, Ga. for the last 11 years. I currently have a 29 ft. Columbia defender, which is for sale. I am looking for a trailer boat that I can tow once in a while to the Florida Keys and maybe to the Georgia and Florida coast. As I have read all the post on ballast, water versas keel, etc. The one thing that sticks out in my mind is that the specs given by Catalina are very suspect. Examble: the wing keel is listed at 4200 lbs. with a 1050 lb. keel. That is 25% ballast to displacement ratio. Pretty light!! The dealer in St. Simons Island says it is really 3450 lbs. total displacement. The tech dept. at Catalina says 4200 lbs.(he was reading from the brochure). Catalina has not answered my e-mails on this. Any real ideas? The reason I am looking at the wing/k is I will be leaving my boat in the water most of the year and towing it only on vacation once or twice a year. Any ideas on the real weight? There is a towing issue.

Ed: You might try emailing Kent Nelson at Catalina Yachts...His email is Kent@Catalinayachts.com . I haven't had any trouble getting answers to questions from Kent in the past.

If you decide to purchase a new C250 I can give you some examples of things that I dealt with in purchasing my new boat last summer that might be helpful....also Frog0911 can give you some thoughts based on his experiences, I'm sure he wouldn't mind.

Feel free to drop me an email if you like...best of luck in getting the boat you like...either way you go, WB or WK, I'm sure you will like the boat...

Your right to suspect Catalina numbers...they don't mean much. Here are some actual weights from guys who have taken their boats to the scales.

Bryan Beamer has weighed his fully loaded wing keel at 6,256 lbs.

Dan weighed his fully loaded water ballast at about 4,500 lbs.

Bryan may have had his beer supply stored on board , actually I'm just trying to make the point that there is room for variation of equipment. They also don't say how they dealt with tongue weight... whether they unhooked from trailer to weigh the tow seperately to subtract it.
