Hey Guys & Gals! Gary B. and his committees are working their butts off setting up these Nationals to be the best ever. Gary has a plethora of C25 SR, a smattering of C25 TR's and a dearth of C250's...make the effort and come and support our Nationals. It's going to be at one of the most beautiful venues anywhere.

I'm new to the C250 and would love to come out for the Nationals, though it's unlikely since having just bought the boat we want to get to know her better before we go off galavanting; also she's a winger so trailering isn't quite the cakewalk enjoyed by WB owners. Still, gathering & sailing with lots of similar boats is a tremendously appealing idea. What exactly happens at the Nationals? Racing, I gather - anything else? Cruising workshops etc? How many boats show up? Those of you who've gone, what's the experience been like?

Reuben. I am the captain of the host fleet this year, but I have not yet been to a Nationals myself! What I know about the past is either in an archived thread I began late last fall that has the word "expectations" in it., or:

Click on the "racing" section of the home page. There are photos and some text from the last few National Regattas.

I am beating the bushes this year to get a large turn out. I expect this Nationals will be significantly larger than some in the past, since all 12 of our local boats have given verbal "yesses", and a number of boats have committed verbally to attend from further away. I may be dreaming, but 30 boats is still my goal and might be within reach if most of the people who have expressed interest actually come for this regatta, but the 250 class looks the smallest.

We are going to have relatively casual "learning oriented" racing for 3 days, plus optional cruise opportunities for several days afterward. I think this will be a SUPER time to get to know boats better, learn a bit about how to go faster, and socialize with like-minded folk. I want this to be FUN and a learning experience for everyone, and I am trying hard to de-mystify the whole "racing" thing that scares some folks off. If people don't want to "Race", come anyway and "Cruise Fast" (or slow...if that turns you on).

It's a Party where you learn something while having a good time!

Please check our websites, accessible through the RACING link on the homepage, or via the sticky notice at the top of the General Forum page. Fly ins are welcome! We are trying to match boats and crews, but we need BOATS first!

Gary, to help people learn, it might be a good idea to have a "What worked/What didn't work" by the winners after racing each day. The skippers who won races that day could share some of their secretes with the rest of the teams.

Has been a helpful learning tool that has been used for fleet development at another club I was part of. Share a beer, some munchies and talk about the days races.

What do ya' think?

Already planned, guys....I am SERIOUS about this being a "learning thing". If we ONLY wanted serious racers who already knew "everything", we'd have about 4 boats show up. I SO much want this to be "enabling".....maybe the next Nationals will draw even more boats if we de-mystify the racing thing and let folks experience how much fun it is, and how much they can learn. Thanks for the idea..... it's been in my thinking for quite some time.....

We can't "force" winning boats to tell us all their secrets, but a "post-race" Q and A is in the mix. PLUS: Derek has agreed to do a PRE-race seminar on simple tactics and RULES review......

This will be a Nationals for the "inexperienced" to learn.

And, yes, so far there are too few 250s coming, as far as I know...Your odds of becoming the next "National Champion" look pretty good!
