The week after christmas, my wife, two kids and I are headed to Sun City(Phoenix), Arizona to visit inlaws. We were thinking about going to Lake Mead or Lake Powell while we're there. Also, I plan to check out Lake Pleasant, since it is a rock throw away from Sun City. Any suggestions on one or the other would be great.
Many sailors from our local club have hauled to Lake Powell. While all say it is beautiful (anchorages, beaches, coves...) it is definately not a sailing venue. Expect to motor everywhere. There can be some winds, but the canyon walls make them fluky. Also, check lake conditions. They have both suffered the loss of water like the rest of us in the desert.
It will be chilly out here, but if you want a nice ride with warm days and some water, Lake Havasu has the (a) London Bridge with stuff going on all the time. It will be the warmest place around during the day.
Lake Pleasant is about the only sailing around and there is the Sailboat Shop that can rent you a C250 or other for the day.
Not much else to do there except the visitors center with a select variety if flora and fauna - gila monsters, rattle snakes, tarantulas, and scorpions. Also cactus of the cholla (jumping), saguaro, and barrel kind.
You know, our cuddly desert dwellers.
I would offer up a ride if there is anything left of my boat after the race series ends in Dec.
Kip, I live in Las Vegas and have my C25 on Lake Mead at one of the local marinas. I can't speak for Lake Powell and have only been to Lake Pleasant one time (both of out families live in AZ)but I can tell you much about Mead. From Sun City, the drive will take 4-5 hours depending on traffic over the dam. My wife's folks live right down the road from Sun City in Pebble Creek so we are down that way alot. We always drive because we take our dog with us when we travel. Back to Lake Mead....this time of year we are getting into the best season for sailing. The heat is backing off and we can start to really enjoy the weather on the lake. Plus, as the water cools down we lose alot of the powerboat crowd. The lake is very low right now due to a few dry winters upstream and greedy Californians downstream. (Sorry CA forum members...please don't sick your huge Governor on me!) Still, there is plenty of water and tons of area to explore. I would happy to take you and your family out sailing if you have time or just show you around our marina. If you have more questions please feel free to e-mail me as needed. Take care.
