This is a mast step and halyard plate for a C-25....does anyone know if the step is the same as on the 250? They are sold separately, and I want to use the plate on my 250WB to start leading lines aft.

Unless there has been some change, the mast step on the c250 is welded to the support post. The post on the center board boat slides down into a pocket below the coffee table. When removing the step, the post comes out too.

To retrofit a plate... the plate must have a large hole just larger than the compression post. I expect either Catalina can supply this or it can be fabricated from a piece of stainless. When adding, it may also be necessary to add a shim at the bottom off the compression post to match the thickness of the plate... I'd ask Catalina unless someone else has the answer.

post note: I recall that Dietmar Glogner had one made or welded side strips to his.

What is wrong with the mast step and halyard plate that comes standard on the C250?

Thanks Arlyn, I knew you'd come through. Indeed Bryan, Lady Kay is one of the last WB with halyards not led aft. I have a call in with Catalina. It appears Mr. Grass is no longer with them. A request for tech support led me to the voice mail box (what else is new) of a Mr. Kent Nelson. I'm still waiting to hear from him. If I don't get a good answer from Catalina I'll probably take a gamble and buy the plate from Catlina Direct,($35-ish) and see if I can make it work. I've got a serious drillpress out in the workshop....<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle>

Kind of makes you wonder what Catalina is doing. It seems they put different goodies on each boat. I.e. cockpit table on the wb, Halyards led to cockpit, 12 gal water tank, mainsheet traveler and self-tailers on the wk. It seems like there is more.

Bryan,

I think in part, the answer to this is that when the wing was introduced, it was expected that it would be a boat slipped or moored compared to the center board which was designed to be a trailer sailor.

Spoke to Kent Nelson today, who passed me on to Doug at Garhauer...the folks who make the maststeps for Catalina.

After some discussion, he is sending me a plate of roughly the right size, with some small holes in it that should not interfere with where I need to drill and will be hidden in the end. (think he said it is part of a Capri26 setup...not sure)

Cost $20.00 <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle> Hope I can make it work.

I have also started collecting the stoppers/organizers on e-bay....any suggestions on how to mount these on the roof? Just drill a hole through the roof and the liner and put nice big washers on as backing plates and a nice dollup of 5200? The space between the roof and the liner will not create a problem?

Whoaaaa!!!!

As I'm visualizing all these lines and organizers and cleats, I suddenly realize that the cabintop winches I'm planning on using for all this are occupied by...the jib sheets. So, I need to either cleat off the sheet before the winch, which is a lot of force on a cranked in sheet......or add winches......some nice self tailers on the coaming maybe let's see......cheapest thing I found is almost FOUR BU's.....even non tailers with cleats are not cheap......any ideas out there?

Here is the standard wing keel set up.

The small cam cleat is for the Cunningham
The double clutch in front of the winch is for the main halyard and single line reef.
On the port side the same thing is set up only it is a single clutch of the drifter halyard
The small cam cleat on the port side is for the furler line.

The only problem I have experienced with this set up it is a little hard to do a reef while on a port tack. As you said the jib sheet is on the winch and you need the winch to tighten the main halyard after the reef is set. Other than that I have no problems with the set up.

Oscar, as you have the tiller, and use a 110 headsail, I don't think coaming winches are necessary. One option is to replace the cams at the companionway with captive swivel cams. 90% of the time, they will handle the jib sheets, the other 10% simply go around the winches first. Many of us have used them and they work well. If you have self tailers on the cabin... just don't use the stripper and cleat.

Another option is to place Jam cleats on the coamings... These could be used for jib sheets in all but heavy air. They would also cleat the drifter. They would require rub strakes on the cabin corners but thats no problem. The disadvantage is releasing them is more difficult.

One line Bryan didn't outline is the topping lift... he may have a fixed lift. I've never explored whether a fixed lift will work well on the c250. My guess is that it would leave the boom a bit low while at dock or anchor. He may be using the cleat intended for the topping lift for the cunningham.

They may have changed this in the newer models, but my '97 wing keel has the topping lift being lead through one of the starboard clutches. The reefing line was originally rigged to tie off to a small horn cleat on the mast. I didn't like having to go forward to reef, so I lead the reefing line through a bullet block and aft to the port side clutch. (I have a roller furling jib and don't use the jib halyard that was in the port side clutch anyway.)
I found hauling in the topping lift to raise the clew a few feet makes the single-line reefing go much smoother. Since the main halyard, topping lift and reefing line are all on the clutches, it goes pretty fast.

If you can live with a brief moment of luff in the jib while on a port tack, cross the jib sheet to the port side winch before reefing and then put it back after you've tightened the main halyard.

I appreciate all your inputs......after thinking about it for a while I think I'm going with the following setup....(some of the pieces I've already found on e-bay....others will come or are not too dear to order from the evil empire):

*Drifter halyard on the mast.
*Jib sheets via blocks on the midship pulpit to a small winch above the coaming box, I'll remove the cam cleats off the hatch and mount them on 1" angled plates behind the winches. (Arlyn is right, the only time force, and very little, is required is when sheeting in close hauled, so the smallest winches will suffice. It will be nice to have them close to the helm, as I am frequently single handling with Lady K. chasing the little ones....)
*Six blocks on the halyard plate, two three sheave organizers and two three line jammers port and starboard. Main halyard/topping lift/#1 reef starboard.....boom vang/number 2reef/drifter clew on port.
*There's a roll of canvas in my future, think I will fabricate some line organizer bags that snap onto the cabin below the winches, and build in a foam pad so it's a backrest too....whaddayathink?

Every pic of your 250 I see makes me want one more. I love my C25, but your boat is so clean and shiny, not to mention well organized. Even sailing with a fender on the starboard lifeline, she's still a beauty. Well done at the Nationals.

I installed the cam cleat for the Cunningham. My topping lift is not fixed. I have a 1/4" line (I think) coming from the mast head to about 18" above the back of the boom,the line in the boom exists the back of the boom and connects to the line from the mast head then it goes all the way to the gooseneck has an internal block bringing the topping lift line back towards the cockpit then exists the starboard side of the boom to a jam cleat. This is standard from the factory on the 2000 wing keel.
Sorry I can’t find a clear picture of the cleat for the topping lift.

My second reef is a 2-line system that has to be set on the cabin top and is a 2-man job.(person in cockpit controls the halyard) If I used it more I would consider a single line system for the second reef. In all honesty it's not that bad to set the second reef on the cabin top.

I also have a pigtail off of the backstay to keep the boom from swinging while at the dock

Thanks for the comments Shawn <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle> Notice the signature picture No fenders hanging from lifelines. The 250 doesnot have a big cockpit locker like the c25. I don't have a good place to store fenders.
