I just got back from racing at Put-In-Bay. Lets just say if we didn’t show up, they wouldn’t have missed us.
On the way to the Island, we encountered two storms, both with winds in the 35 to 40 knot range. There was some pretty intense lightening and rain that was heading completely horizontal, plus some really odd wave series. At one point we were doing 10.5 kts with just the main!!!! (not in the C-25, mind you, but still 2 knots above hull speed)
We had taken a flyer around the south end of Kelley’s island based on a South westerly weather report that we had. Out of the 40 boats that started, we were the only one going the Southerly route. Most likely we were in first by over an hour at that point. Unfortunately, the wind shifted and didn’t hold when the second storm rolled int. This put us in Last by about 20 minutes. During the second storm, we were able to keep a single reef-number two combination going and were doing about 14 kts down the backs of waves Unfortunately it caused us to slip at least a mile off course, not to mention the wind shift gave everyone else a lift right through the northerly route. We were knocked down, with no way of coming up (island and shoal).
The rest of the week was a series of disappointments. Protests. Tacking into Seaweed after leading in a 70 boat race then watching the rest of the fleet sail by like they had their motors on. Etc. Etc. Etc.
Still had a good time. Next stop for the crew KWRW, hopefully we fare better there.
Sounds rough, Duane, but also sounds exciting. Perhaps in a bad way, but I've never experience anything like that. So you know what they say about ignorance being blissful?
You said you weren't in The Flying Wasp, what kind of boat were you in? Incidentally, I've never sailed Lake Erie and would love to. If you're looking for a crew member some weekend, I'd love to come up. I'm only two hours away in Columbus.
Anyway, I'm glad you didn't have any injuries, or worse, to report.

I was on an Evelyn 32-2....There were injuries - no majors, broken nose, a shiner. One guy almost went in, but we were able to grab on to keep him from sliding any farther.
We might be able to work out something on Lake Erie, it would have to wait until the racing season is over though....but then again, September is some of the best weather.
Sounds great, Duane, about sailing in September I mean, not the injuries. Broken noses hurt bad! I look forward to sailing big water with you. Alum Creek Reservoir will seem like a puddle after sailing Erie.
