Just curious if anyone is concerned about the spread of West Nile and how to deal with keepin the lil winged criters out of the cabin area if spending the night on the boat.....Is mosquito netting a possibility...or does someone such as CD or West make a product that will work for this purpose....did not see anything in the CD C 25 catalogue. Also have a similar concern for wasps, which for some reason, just love to hang out around the boat...I suppose some type of an entry way or hatch opening removal screen cover could be constructed.
I go to the local hardware store and get a couple of citranila candles. Burn them in either the cockpit or cabin. You can find nice decrotive ones at some grocery stores or camping good store.
You can buy velcro screen kits at West and other chandleries. I've also seen a custom cokpit cover that the owner fitted with screen side curtains. She kept the bottoms inside the cockpit by sewing small fishing weights along the bottom hem.
I saw a boat recently that used a large insect netting/canopy, like the kind one puts over a bed in the tropics, over the whole cabintop to keep the pests out.
There is another thread about mosquito netting...dated 4/28/2003. Steve Milby discussed his technique for screening his c25. Just do a search on mosquitos on the C25 forum. Based on those comments I bought 5 yards of 84" netting at a local Army/Navy Surplus store called 'Uncle Sams'. $6 a yard. I have not executed the plan yet because I keep forgetting tailors chalk I need to mark the seam locations. Good Luck.

I'd been told once that mosquitos had a very limited vertical and horizontal flight distance. So that you'd never encounter a mosquito on the second floor of a building and that a quick acceleration would permanently get you away from at least one mosquito. Was I getting my leg pulled?
The reason I ask is that I've never had a mosquito out on the dock; even though they are very prevalent up on the shore. I assumed that this was based on their limited horizontal flight distance.

You're right, to an extent, about the vertical distance. Many species won't be active more than 6-8 feet off the ground. Others, those which feed on birds (and opportunistically on humans), don't have such a limitation. Many salt water species have a flight radius of several miles, most fresh water species don't travel more than a few hundred yards from their breeding sites. My wife recently bought a Coleman devise - Mosquito Deleto - for our home near the lake. Does a great job of clearing the backyard of these little pests. My gut says it may a little to big for a boat, but perhaps Coleman or some othe camping supplier has a smaller compact unit that would work on the boat.

I built a balcony off my attic, at least thirty feet off the ground, and the little buggers had no trouble reaching that altitude. I've been having some luck with the AVON SSS for years.
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote> While in Chicago last week, my daughter spotted a mosquito-like insect clinging to the outside of our hotel window...on the 24th floor!
Odds are that was a mayfly (canadian soldier, caddis, shadfly, fishfly and about a zillion other names) Most of your Great Lakes areas get them this time of the year. The 24th floor isn't at all unbelievable.
We have been very happy w/ a companionway screen by Bug Busters- here's a link. The size we purchased fits the C25 companionway perfectly (I can check the size if anyone would like to know).

Odds are that it absolutely WASN'T a mayfly, canadian soldier, caddis, shadfly, fishfly!
Uhhh, Duane?...We're from Michigan,...you know, the "Great Lakes State"...I think we know the difference between a tiny mosquito and a fishfly, mayfly, canadian soldier, caddis, shadfly,...etc, especially since we have to clean the latter off our boat on a daily basis.
No, the insect we saw on the window in Chicago was a teeny, tiny mosquito.
Touché, mon frère. That was a well deserved payback, Steve. <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle> Just don't forget that Dave Bristle engaged in that little tête-à-tête, as well. <img src=icon_smile_evil.gif border=0 align=middle>
