OK. Let's see. Lived on the Sound for some 20 years. Owned some sort of a boat for most of them. Never seen the San Juan Islands exept for a bike tour and a few hours in a kayak. Maybe it's time?

Spending two weeks in the Islands next month. What was the book recomendation for currents? What's you favorite stop?

You're gonna love it!

For the currents get two booklets:

"Current Atlas" put out by the Canadian Dept. of Fisheries and Oceans

and "Washburne's Tables" by Randel Washburne

These two booklets are used together to see what the currents are doing on any day and any specific hour in the San Juans and the Gulf Islands.

As to favorites, Wow, where to begin!!!

Favorites:
Fossil Bay on Sucia Island (Washington State Park)

Montague Harbor (Galliano Island)

Ganges Harbor (Saltspring Island)

Sidney Marina (Beautiful marina! Take the city bus to Butchart Gardens and Victoria from the bus stop about 5 blocks from the marina)

Sidney Spit anchorage (gorgeous sunsets if there are cumulous clouds over the mountains on Vancouver Island)

Wallace Island (B.C. Provincial Park)

Deer Harbor (Orcas Island)

Otter Bay Marina, North Pender Island (small, cozy marina, down-home feeling, has a nice swimming pool)

Doug when are you going. Ruth and I will be heading north on August 8th and returning August 23rd. We will be at Stewart Island along with Ken Cave on the 16th. Everything else is open. Roche harbor is fun if you have never been. Lots of tiger shrimp under the docks for the kids to catch. Garison Bay, British Camp not much further. Good hike to the top of the hill. Deer Harbor is nice. Friday harbor for restocking, ice cream, a movie. The marinas operate like the hotel system. You show up early and watch who checks out. Get a slip one or two nights. stay on the hook no big deal. Slips are not bad for the C-25 price wise. Stay clear of Point Wilson going or comming. Check out
www.nwboating.com all the info you could want on all the spots. We will be looking at some new spots this year. Fishermans bay for one. If you would like to get together up there live us a shout. It would be fun. Ill be going north via Edmonds, Swinomish chanel. Kingston is good. Eagle harbor is good Blakely harbor is good. Port Townsend marinas are both good. Pt Hudson marina is very interesting. Good chineese food. Be carefull if you use the Port Townsend canal. Tide and wind can be hell in Oak bay at the south. The canal can be tough if you against the tide it can be dam impossable. Hope we see you.

Doug I have an aux fuel tank if you would like it. Free . It sets between the seats at the stern and is 10 or 12 gallons. Ill drop it at the boat if you want it.

Douglas,
I'm might be interested in borrowing the bigger tank if it's OK. Just toss it on the boat if you get the chance. Don't make a special trip though, I may just "borrow" one off by brother in law's boat. This weekend I'm at the beach house, then I have to work for a few days. Next Friday I leave for a short backpacking trip, then hook up with the boat in Port Orchard and head North on the 11th. Have to be back in Port Ochard on the 23rd. We'll look for you at Stuart on the 16th. I'll also drop you a line if and when we firm up a sail plan.

My advice? Get out of the marinas and anchor out or visit the outer, less populated islands. Favorites include Clark on a minus low tide, Matia (Rolf Cove on NE corner), or Fox Cove on SW corner of Sucia. I just flew over the San Juans on Saturday. It looked SO crowded to me. I am going to keep going in June and risking a little rain to avoid the crowds. If in the Gulf Islands, visit Conover Cove on Wallace Island. I second the votes for Ganges on Saltspring if you must be in a marina.

Word of advice! Don't try to sail in or out Guemes Channel (Anacortes) on Fridays between 10:00AM and 1:00 PM as you will be deluged with all the charter boats trying to get back.

August is a real zoo in the San Juans-just came back from Stuart Island (Reid Harbor)and there were around a hundred boats anchored out! (Sorry we missed you Doug-but were there in the fifteenth-lots of news to catch up on as Joanne is now teaching on Shaw!)

Found that ten days in Vancouver BC was real fun-and if you have recip with the various clubs there, almost free! Since a lot of their members are also sailing elsewhere, never had a problem getting slips, even during the fireworks festival! Bring your bikes, as the trails around Stanley Park are really great!

And: sailing in the San Juans and Gulf Islands is really better in June! Even better in May!!

Here's the rub- I was on a 3 day backpacking trip right before the two week run to the islands. As luck would have it, I managed to jump off a log and seriously sprain my ankle. Thought I'd broken it. Had to hobble 2 miles back to the trail head, X-rays, crutches, etc. I had to spend the first week at home with ice bags on my foot.
We did take off and sailed North the 2nd week. Made it to Port Townsend. Great weather, good sailing, but I was largely stuck on the boat while in port.

Doug- Thanks for dropping off the tank. We ended up just buying a spare 6 so we didn't use it. Thanks for bringing it down though.

To the Folsom croud,
I have been working on the admrial ever since we got the 25 and I think she might allow me to do a trip to the San Juans. From past entries I get the idea that a trip might be inprocess with you for next year. If so do you let people from further south join your group, what equipment is needed (I have never been out for more than a week ender with a very minimallistic approach [Oscar sorry about the spelling]).<img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle>

Doug sorry you didn't make it up. We had a wonderfull two weeks. Only two days with high winds of 40kts. One in Oak Harbor on the way home and one in the Bellingham chanel. Spencer spit was great and we caught so much crab we got tired of eating it. Dear Harbor was a let down as the marina went broke and is now run by the bank. Very expensive and not very clean. Sucia was wonderfull and we saw many shooting stars. Stoped in LaConner on the way home for lunch. All in All I'm fried and resting up for next weekend. Oro bay LACC cruise. We also attended the Latitudes and Attitudes West Coast cruise party what a riot. Bob Bitchen and Jody as well as live music from Eric Stone. Ten Kegs of donated beer from local breweries, and what ever people brought for the pot luck. Several huge sacks of fresh caught oysters, a bon fire and to many other things to remember it all.

Mat,

We would love to have you join us next year for the San Juan/Gulf Islands trip. It's a great trip and a beautiful area. Timing is usually mid July through early August sometime. We'll firm that up next year as it gets closer. I'll email with more info.
