A little over a month ago, I took delivery of a new 250WB, put her in the Rehoboth Bay in Delaware and waited. I waited for a weekend with a long enough dry period to go out. I waited for a weekend without a wedding or a graduation. It seemed I waited without a break until this weekend. I sailed Friday from 5 until sunset. All day Saturday. Saturday night I sailed from 8PM until about 12:30 hoping for a dramatic glimpse of the full moon. Sunday, thats right... I was right back out there. WHAT A BOAT! She pointed well and fast. The balance of the rig seemed perfect. I had been toying with the idea of maybe a 130 genoa but I now think that would be a waste. Better to try a drifter. She felt luxurious compared to my 2 previous "project boats". Perched in the rail seats with a tiller extender I was thrilled with my view. Don't mean to gush here but man oh man I love this boat!

Next time you're out sheet in the jib and look up at the spreader. You'll see that a 130 would run into it. Indeed the drifter is the only answer. Ullman Ventura in CA, Gary Swenson, 805-644-9573 makes a beatiful high cut drifter for this boat. $750.- including sheets and blocks to bolt onto the aft pulpit. Go to Arlyns web site and see pictures.......Arlyn how about a link?
Link for the drifter is, but if your boat came equipped with the Shaefer furler...be sure to let Gary Swenson or your sail maker know that. With the CDI, its a non issue the sail can be cut full luff dimension... but using a Shaefer, I don't know what the game plan is.
My sentiments exactly! And the feeling grows on you too!
I looked at a lot of sailboats before I traded in my C-22. The first time I saw a 250 I knew I wanted one. I even went back and forth between the Hunter 26 and the 250 at a boat show and still decided on the 250. It is versatile and pratical. And I don't have any complaints about the way my wing keel sails. I've had her out in 30kt winds and double reefed just to see what she would do. Although there was a lot of windage on the hull she still made way beating. Easy to sail and plenty of room for two or even three. Me and my two brothers took Chick-a-pea to the Bahamas with two peoples SCUBA gear, three tanks, inflatable kayak, off shore fishing gear, a giant cooler in the cabin, duffle bags, camera bags, food, CD case, etc., and we still had more room than the others boats with just two aboard. The pop top works out great with the canvas cover. The open transom makes swiming and boarding easy. The motor doesn't need a bracket to lower it. There is plenty of room in the cockpit with the tiller tied back at anchor. And if you really want to kick back in the pulpit seats, get an Auto-tiller!
Post us some pictures soon. I would love to be able to go up the east coast all the way to Maine. But for now I have to rely on you guys to share your experience. You can check out some of my pictues at the Trailer Sailer Bahamas Flotilla site.
Ben, Did I download a clip of you guys sailing out? It seems to me you were panning around and thanking someone for breakfast. I am pretty sure if it wasn't you it was someone on that same trip. I love where I sail. The only improvement I can think of would be a season that extends year round. Maybe at retirement! Anyway, Delaware is pretty mild, even sweltering hot in the summer, but when you get up towards Maine expect to be bundled up almost all of the time. Too late for me, gotta hit the rack! Good sailing! Bill
Yes, that was me behind the camcorder. That was my younger brother Brandon who was putting on his hat after doing breakfast. I have the whole movie digitized but it is about 93mb and AOL doesn't give me that much FTP space. If I can find a space I'll upload the whole movie.
