I read Arlyn Stewart's piece in "Mainsheet" and was inspired at what lays ahead for me this summer as I sail my boat for the first time. Arlyn, I was particularly interested in your tale of the dancing Catalina at anchorage. I need an education on what a "riding sail" is and how it works. Is it recommended over two anchors? Last summer, my wife and I spent a few days in south Puget Sound in our previous boat - a '75 Catalina 27. We dropped anchor in a relatively sheltered anchorage which lies sandwiched between Harstein and McMicken islands. At around 11:00pm a howling wind came up and blew for most of the night. It was a pretty wild ride - awakening me every hour or so just to check my anchor and position. Didn't move an inch, however, I would have preferred more piece of mind and a uninterrupted night's sleep. Is that a reasonable expectation with my C250. What addition of equipment or combination will help me move closer that standard with this vessel.
Thanks.

River,

My discovery last summer was that this issue becomes more than an annoyance and enters the realm of safety of boat and crew.

There are two basic ways to cope...either the riding sail or more than one anchor. And, as there are often times when more than one anchor is not possible, a riding sail seems to be important.

The jury is not in what seems to be the most effective. There are several criteria. Needed is a method to prevent the boat from going beam to the wind in a blow... but also needed is a riding sail that allows a decent nights sleep without adverse noise generated from the sail.

I have built a test model for this summers cruise and will provide a report. It is a kite or V design and mounts aft of the backstay.
