When a few weeks ago I thought I'd test whether emails get through to Catalina... I offered the tech tip of cutting the V berth hatch fore and aft and using a piano hinge...
Well, got the following comment today, "Great idea, Arlyn. Did you sent it in to the Association? Thanks! David Graas - Technical Support".
So, they are hearing... but it takes a while. Hopefully they will start cutting the hatch covers fore and aft rather than abeam.
Its been some time since the association made offerings to the tech section of the Mainsheet... Catalina does reserve final editing of its content... so they would take note of those offerings. Perhaps some of this stuff that would be helpful to new models... like Oscar's tip to channel water from the aft compartment to the bilge ought to be sent there. Think we may have a new technical editor...
I cut my v-berth storage lid, fore and aft of course, sanded the edges smooth, treated the whole thing with boiled linseed oil, and put the piano hinge part off untill later. I have now cancelled it altogether. Unless a many pounder starts dancing on it, the two halves are rigid enough by themselves, and after all, the many pounder would not get himself through the hatch to dance on them to begin with, so that takes care of that. Having the two halves separate allows me to leave one side completely undisturbed (cushion and everything on it included), while having the other side completely empty, including the hatch. I like it.
I sent the tech tip regarding drain holes to Jim, only to learn you did same. Thanks. However, did we ever reach a conclusion whether the WB and the WK are the same or not? From the posts by the WK folks it sounded like they were looking at the same thing I was, but not seeing the same thing. I could be wrong.
Yes, Catalina gets e-mails, but their responses are slow to all forms of communication. Only by bombarding them with somewhat cynical messages (e-mail and voice) have I finally gotten them to move....so:
As per Frank Butlers arrangements, Tuesday Lady Kay is going to visit Lighthouse Harbor Marina in Greentown PA, regarding my warrantee items, the most pressing, (read, the only one I can't fix myself if I have to) being the list to starboard. I visited their web site and saw only belch fires....not a word of Catalina or even a sailboat.......red flag!!!
Also somewhat disturbing in my conversations with Frank Butler was the fact that if the boat does not list after we remove the motor, he sees no problem. IOW, this boat is not designed to float level with a motor on it. If it does list without a motor, he suggests putting in lead on the port side.......
I don't like that idea. I bought a water ballast and am putting up with the minimal headroom so I would have minimal weight to drag down the road. Adding lead is not a fix in my eyes.....in that case I plan on putting up a fight.
The hinge while adding some rigidity, mainly serves to hold the half hatch cover in place vertical while the locker is open as it rest the hatch against the other sides cushion.
Actually I had not submitted your tech tip but was involved in the edit of the forum takeoff and sent that back to Jim. Again...great tech tip.
Gosh, I hope that a solution will be found to fix the list. Bet your bibby that there has been some internal chatter about making @#$% sure that corrective measures are made to production. It has been said very often how amazing it is that Frank Butler himself handles so much of the dialog with owners about problems. Then using that information to refine his product. It's a great business tactic. We had a car dealership locally that was a huge success. The dealer was never up front where the sales were going on... he ran the service department which provided the best service in the area.
Your findings will be interesting...
And, Dave Bristle got me pretty good when I suggested you solve the problem with a full holding tank...

The reason we haven’t had any articles in the Tech section in over a year or so is the C25/C250 Natl. Assoc. needs a tech editor. It is a volunteer position and the deadlines have to be met. Although I have volunteered I don’t feel qualified to write the section. (Mainsail = Main Power that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.) Arlyn, you have proved you can write, care to meet a deadline 4 times a year? The Assoc. really needs this position to be filled by a dedicated person with some tech knowledge of both boats.
Ha ha...you guys have all secretly desired to be railroad engineers...
I did agree to send in tech tips for the next Mainsheet issue if the very near deadline can be made... and if made will include two, one by Oscar and one by me.
I liked John's sugestion to have a contact person for each boat...
