I need to re-paint the bottom of my boat and was wondering how most of you paint under the pads? Do you just drop one pad at a time or do you brace the boat some how to keep the boat from moving.... then lower one pad at a time.... paint the area.... move pad back up..... Move to the next one ....etc.? I'm a little sqeamish to loosen up those pads.... Any help appreciated

Jerry,
I was fortunate to have a tree nearby and I ran a line from the tree to a block on the mast step and back to the mainsheet winch. I tighentned up just enough to allow me to drop all the pads on one side and paint under all of them, than I used my truck to tie off to for the other side. You can, however, lower one pad at a time and then raise it to paint under the next pad...it will just take longer to do one pad at a time.

When I painted my C-22, I stripped, sanded and painted everything except under the trailer bunks. Then I jacked the trailer up, with the boat on it, about 18” high. Then I put concrete blocks under the trailer frame. Then I built a wooden cradle under the boat. As I recall, I used mostly 2X6 lumber, except for the upright supporting members, which were 4X4. The bunks of the wooden cradle covered different parts of the bottom than the trailer bunks. Then I lowered the trailer out from under the boat, and stripped, sanded and painted the areas that had been under the trailer bunks. Then I jacked the trailer up under the boat, dismantled the wooden cradle, and lowered the boat and trailer to the ground. It sounds like a lot of work, but building a simple cradle really wasn't a bad job.

Related to this topic, has anyone replaced the pads with screw-jacks.I've found that its not possible to support any of the boat weight on the pads. Its possible to only push the pads up to the hull and tighten the screws. I've also found that when the boat is lifted on to the trailer the weight distribution on the pads may not be even. A slight difference in boat position will change the resting position on the pads.

I think the replacement with screw pads would be an easy job, just drop the screws in to pipe hole with a washer as a pressure bearing surface...
