Yesterday after a greatly of sailing on Lake Monroe, Sanford Fl. as we approached the docking slip, my swing keel would not stay in the upright position. After cranking it up a number of times the keel free wheeled and hit soft mud bottom. I was thank full that it bottomed out. have any other sailors experienced a failure of their keel winch? are my only options to replace the winch. I believe I can lower my keel and ground it in the mud at my slip. Can I replace the winch without hauling out my boat?

Did you recently service the winch? There is a warning about getting lubrication on the friction discs. As you were raising the keel, was the ratchet pawl clicking solidly over the gear teeth? I am trying to picture whether your friction plate is slipping or the ratchet pawl stopped engaging with the gear teeth.
It is possible to service or replace the winch while in the water. Just don't let the cable fall through.
Catalina Direct has the replacement--apparently upgraded.

Thanks for the response. no I did not service the winch. I had sprayed the winch a few months ago. It did slip back then ,but had not slipped since. I decided to purchase a new winch. I have to wait over 6 weeks for replacement cable kit. I will wait for delivery before I haul Enchantment II and change it all. Thanks again for the advise.
