Morning all...

I bolted the tiller to the rudder yesterday and noted that the tiller did not "lift" by pivoting on the bolt. Is that normal?

It would be better if the tiller could be lifted to clear the fuel tank hatch and make more room in the cockpit.

Did this happen on your boat and did you do something to make the tiller lift to clear the hatch?

Thoughts appreciated...

Best,

Carl

I believe it would be considered a third gen rudder.

Just bought one but haven't put it together yet. I shall investigate and report my findings. I shall also have a beer whilst doing so...

Beer is good...tiller pivots. Looking at your picture, it looks like, rather than two side attachments that I have, that you have a single part that fits over the top as well as the side, yes?

Thanks for checking...

Yes, the stainless is a channel that caps the top of the rudder.

The boat is new to me - perhaps I'm missing a part?

The cap is different than what I have which is two straps on either side of the rudder attached by a single bolt to the rudder. I think you have this.http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm/product/1146/tiller-strap-u-shaped-c-25-c-250.cfm

Yes, that linked part is is the one.

Hope there is an answer... hard to accept that you would have to remove the tiller to open the hatch to the fuel locker...??? What if you had to get into the locker while underway?

Don't know if any of these links work, but they show the 2nd gen rudder with the fitting you have and it pivots on the single bolt. How many bolts do you have running through the rudder? If its single, it should pivot up.

Some how the bolt hole in the rudder got drilled to far forward or the ushaped bracket is not the right one for your rudder. It's a mystery. If you buy the 2side strap type it should solve the problem.

It was the mis-located bolt hole... appreciate the tip.

Got out the handy-dandy hole enlarger and we are back on track.

Best to all,
