When I was on a slip my wife and our guests sometimes complained that the step up from the dock to the boat was uncomfortably high. I mentioned it to my father-in-law who vanished into the workshop and a few hours later cam back with a wooden step stool about 32" wide with one regulation 7"x9" rise and run step, and a top step platform that was about 16" deep. Built out of 2x8s, it was a sight to behold! We painted it barn red and added grit to the paint on the treads for good footing. Really did the job, made it a breeze to climb up and down. My wife and father-in-law send it all summer. It soon became the paragon of the boatyard and guys emulated it for their own boats.
I wish I'd taken a photo of it, I could have sold plans for it on the Internet for $5.00 each!
Now I said to myself there are lots of forces: winds and waves and boat wakes around here, so I put a couple of eyebolts on it and tied it to a cleat with some stout line.
Then, just about the end of the season in late October a remnant tropical storm was predicted to hit the area and I went down to double the lines even on my steps. The next day I came back to check the boat and everything was fine except - no steps! Had the big blow taken them away? At 30# they were no lightweights. Wind was onshore so I'd have expected them to wash ashore. Had they been taken away by a passerby? There were lots of transients passing by my end dock in the river?
Thinking about replacing them.
What do you use? Wood, plastic or a rope ladder hooked on the deck? And pictures?

Bruce, Do you think that a dock hand took the steps with the storm coming? I know that around here the yard guys walk the docks before a big storm or blow and remove anything that doesn't look secure and will also check dock lines. Your steps might be sitting in a shed somewhere.

Hopefully, yours will turn up. I keep a plastic folding single step on the boat and mainly use it when we are at a floating dock. I also came across this, similar to my single step, but a two step version:

At least you can take it with you or store it on the boat.

Yes, my first move was to let the yard boss know they were gone. Then I asked all my dockmates. Shrugs all around.
I've got some lumber out in the garage, But I'd like to make it lighter weight.
