Maybe this is of help to someone else...
For the last few months I noticed an increasingly strong odor in the boat. I did what I thought would help... replaced the joker valve (I had backflush from the tank, pumped the tank out, cleaned everything, backflushed the vent line to dislodge any possible clog - still there was an odor. Finally, replaced the sanitary hose between tank and toilet. That did it.
Moral of the story: Old hoses sometimes become permeable to odors.

...and use the real "sanitation" hose ($12-14/foot).

I've also found that fresh water for flushing makes a big difference. My head is plumbed to my water tank.

Buy the best sanitation hose, expensive but it's worth it. Since I no longer sail on a fresh water lake and have moved to salt water I have re-plumbed so that I use fresh water from the water tank for flushing, big difference in odor.

What is involved in switching to fresh water? On my 250 I recently switched to a pressure water system. I use fresh water from the sink to flush.

Some marine toilets are designed for connection to the fresh water source. Others are not. Connection to the freshwater tank can allow contamination into said tank.

Hook up to the sink drain: add water to the sink, then flush from there. That provides separation of waste and water source.

Yup--mine is designed to be connected to a pressurized system. I shouldn't suggest connecting one that isn't. (Nonetheless, I don't drink the water.)
