My keel winch seems to have lost it's braking ability. When I crank the cable up the handle slowly starts to move backward. It doesn't stay in place. I think it has something to do with the brake pads, but I'm not sure. Does anyone know what is causing this and what the repair is?

Correct diagnosis, but I don't know if it can be repaired. Replacement is pretty easy but a little pricey. However, it's a lot cheaper than a keel fall. Check Fulton winch and Catalina Direct. I think Frank might have posted the Fulton model number in the distant past, but I can't find it right off.

I called Catalina Direct and was told that brake disc replacement required sending the winch back to the manufacturer and it would probably cost close to the new cost of winch. So I ended up spending $300 for a new winch, handle and screws. That is on top of the $140 I had to spend on the keel maintenance kit, which they recommend being replaced every two years. So I'm up to $440 on swing keel issues not including the $90 and hour labor costs to install all this stuff.

Not happy owning a swing keel right now.

Unfortunately the price to play. Honda civics are definitely easier on the maintenance and they'll get you there quicker!

Just remember that you don't need a boat, so try and enjoy it, even the "work" part.

One bright spot - they have a vested interest in recommending a 2 year lift system replacement. I think 3-5 years, depending on your circumstances, is reasonable. Also, my marina makes my cables for a lot less than CD charges.
