I have a '78 Cat 25. Do any other owners recognize this as being original?

yes, Original Catalina. My 80 did not have that same location, (no sink in the head) but the build type is OEM. You can find many articles and warnings about changing out the "volcano" for a proper thru-hull. Look closely on the outside pic, you can see the pipe nipple edges (just) Your boat looks clean otherwise!

I replaced the valve with a marine grade ball valve with a brass nipple extending above water line. Used a brass 90 to a hose fitting for the drain. Above water line is for piece of mind if hose is pulled off. Gate valve should be used in your garden.

The infamous Cataline "to-hull" used in the 70s. Use the Search function on that term (or "volcano") in the C-25 forum to see a slew of threads, including stories where the bronze pipe crumbled in people's hands when they were removing it. Is yours not hooked up to anything?

Not hooked up to anything, prior owner covered the vanity sink and removed all plumbing to it and the deck fill line to the tank.

Plan is to get rid of the valve altogether and re fiberglass over the hole.

Although will have to replace to a proper thru-hull for the main sink/icebox drain.

until the removal is complete, take measures to assure isolate the existing, so nothing can hit it. tubing attached and extending above waterline is also helpful.
