After years of commuting to clients all over the city and having kids living in Manhattan and Brooklyn, I'm still fascinated by it--from a slight distance. Approaching LaGuardia at night always is amazing!
Funny, I'm pretty sure that we, USS Oriskany, were in port in Hong Kong for R&R with the Ark in the mid sixties and shared a few Tigers with our fellow sailors. I think the Brits still had grog rations at that time. The Ark is now scrap and the "Mighty O" is an artificial reef off Pensacola. Getting old.
They did scrap the Ark, but the last ship I was on, HMS Ark Royal was only launched around 1983/4 ish. And that was scraped too.
The new Flag ship of the R.N. is HMS Albion, recently launched, I think in 2013. As it happens, my first ship in the RN in 1969 was HMS Albion, then it was a Carrier. Now it's some funky looking support ship type of thing.

A friend of mine when we were stationed together in the Azores, was the guy in charge of putting the "Mighty O" on the seafloor. He was an HT1 when I knew him, but I think he retired as an HTMC. There's a Discovery Channel special: Sinking an Aircraft Carrier on it and he was shown a bunch of times in it. Found his email address & told him how much I liked the show and offered "bravo zulu". Don Herring was his name, looks like maybe his son Ian was the writer for the show (that's a guess, uncommon last name both on the same project)...
