Happy New Year This is the first year since we have owned JD that we were not out on the water over New Year. So we made up for it by camping out on the Trailer.

This is also the first time in many years that we are not out sailing on New Years Day. But the forecast is: partly to mostly crappy conditions and light rain……
We did get the power boat out last night for New Years Eve fireworks and got home just before the rain….
2014, fair winds and following seas and all that…..
Every year I try to make it out sailing to kick off the New Year. It so happens this is also the time of year when the Gray Whales are migrating south, down the California coast, to their breeding sites in the Gulf of California. In the past I have never been lucky enough to come across one, ever, but this year would be different. A nice high-pressure system had set in over Southern California so the air was clear and the temp’s were in the low 70’s. (Apologize in advance to all of you stuck in the deep freeze that seems to be covering most of the country right now.) I was about 3 miles out in 600’ of water when I spied the tell-tale spout of a whale off my port side. I turned down wind towards it and could soon see the back of a Gray Whale about an 1/8th of a mile ahead. However since he was heading south, and so was I, he was pulling away. I stayed with him about ten minutes and decided to start looking elsewhere as it was clear he was leaving me behind. Just then he poked his nose out of the water and proceeded to rise vertically until about a third of his body length was out of the water. He held that position a couple of seconds and then slid back into the water exactly as he came out. Vertically. It was quite a site and one I had never seen before. I turned around towards the north and within five minutes spotted another one to my NW. I turned as to intercept his path for a closer view and was able to get close enough he came by within about 100 yards or so. I have seen a lot of Blue Whales and they tend to come up for air and then submerge quite a distance before they come back up. These Gray Whales seemed to stay closer to the surface after spouting and were clearly visible underwater. This was the last one I saw but, between the two, I had a good show for about a half an hour. Unfortunately I did not have my camera available but I did find this picture which shows a Gray Whale “spyhopping” which apparently is what they call the kind of activity I observed. Hopefully this is a sign of a great sailing year to come. Happy New Years to all my forum mates!
