Hi, Finally joined forum after buying 1982 Catalina 25,SR/SK/traditional interior,Nov. 2012. Boat was very well maintained by past owner(24 yrs).I live in Central New Jersey and sail on Barnegat Bay(40 miles long X 2 miles wide, average depth 6 ft. I have had a few boats since I started sailing in 1970. Started with a DS 16(Schwill),73 Ensenada(Coastal Recreation-destroyed in 76 by Hurricane Bell. Bought a 21 Ft Aquarius(also by CR) next day. In 1990 decided I need a winter boat ,so built 12 Ft 'OldShoe'(designed by Phil Bolger). Also bought 15' West Wight Potter in 1997. Now I had a fleet. First Mate "suggested" downsizing by one. Aye Aye Mam.We had a long period of mild winters to enjoy year long sailing in the 90's. In 2010 got a bug to get a different sailboat to replace the Aquarius(now 34 yrs old, but in great condition(was on 3rd complete set of sails). Found a 1980 Seaforth 24 in Maryland. 21 ft OD,24 OA(Bowsprit and Boomkin)inboard Renault 8 hp diesel.Boat was built by Precision between 1977 and 1982 and was not a great success. It is a 4200 lb,full keel, flush deck,2 berth,5 ft headroom. Was too expensive for its time and basically too small for a family. Precision, when called, did not care to talk about that boat. They built centerboard boats after that. The boat sails beautifully from 8 kts on.As a full keel its slow in light wind. Very stable at 20 kts.My son and I refurbished the teak and brought the gelcoat to near new appearance, replaced original sails in tanbark color with new CDI furler. In 2011 I had chemo and family insisted Potter too small to be safe. Sold it as soon as advertised(cult boat). After successful treatment(everything tasted like 'bottom paint'. In 2012 got antsy, must get a 2nd boat for the winter. Can't use inboard if freezing temp, need an outboard motor on a 23-25 ft boat. Looked around, lots of junk around. You have no idea how people neglect boats. Found C 25,lucky that former owner had 24 years of pride. All I did was to replace the original motor mount(too much effort to raise a 4 stroke)changed all controls to the cockpit. At 82 I want to be at the lowest of center of gravity when sailing. I started the shakedown last spring with minor modifications. Sailed the S 24 till Oct,then launched the C 25. Was last out Friday, 8-12 kts, 51'. Nobody out ?? I keep the boats in a marina, one on the hard, other in the same slip, depending on the season. I enjoyed following the comments on this forum and decided that I better join ASAP.
Great to hear! Welcome! Your background suggests lots of wisdom you can offer this group--hopefully our collective knowledge of the C-25 can repay that!
Do you venture out of the skinny water of the Barnegat into the Big Blue? Any thoughts about adventures beyond that? Any questions about your boat?
A couple of hints (in case you do not have enough to do)
..Add some pics of your boat to an Album and publish it (Members Area > Manage My Albums) ..Add your boat to the Owners list (Members Area > Edit your profile > 'My Boat(s)' ..Add a Signature to your forum profile. (This page > Profile)
Thank You all for your warm welcome. I,for the moment, thought SK meant standard keel, forgot about Swing Keels. My Error. I have a Full Keel-corrected on profile. About my sailing on Barnegat Bay in N.J. It is a hassle to sail for 2-3 hours to the Barnegat Inlet, hope you have the right timing (wind and tide) and hope the conditions out in the ocean are favorable. The after deciding to return,a total of possibly 10 exhausting hours. I decided long ago that I can have more satisfying sails with shorter trips. I have the time to do alot of sailing and my guests are not bored. I like my guests to sail, rather than be ballast. They are happy. Missed 2 great days, this weekend because of other commitments. Sat- 58' Today 68'most unusual for Dec. 43' average. Oh well 50' may come soon.
I should have mentioned that I am very satisfied with the stability, light tiller, fast response and after having 5 ft or less headroom in previous boats,it is spacious. When I mentioned controls in the cockpit,I meant all lines,Jib,Mainsail,Downhaul, furler and even anchor rode(have a quick connect for the anchor and a retrieving line attached to the rode to bring anchor back to the cockpit. Original motor mount was meant for a 2 stroke. I got one from CD for a 8 hp 4 stroke. A big difference in raising.
