Just spent a coupla minutes outside looking at the CDI furler and have decided that the nick/brass snap that is holding in place should be replaced with something more substantial. here is what is on there and it looks fatigued and ready to break. I don't think it is load rated for such things...
"on there" does not tell us much since nothing like that should be anywhere close to a furler. Have you read the CDI manual that is available for download? All parts are clearly shown. Check that exploded view against what you have and let us know what part issues you have. The manual is not a list of suggestions, it is a manual of requirements.
Also read the note to the sailmaker. They explain the head and tack of the sail must have web straps rather than cringles so the sail can wrap smoothly and not wrap around cringles. Does your sail have a strap at the top that the halyard is tied to and a strap at the bottom that the downhaul is tied to?
One thing the manual does not mention is the use of toggles to extend the forestay if it is too short. Here you see the extra toggle, (making two) connecting the eye strap on the bottom of the furler to the tang on the stem fitting on the bow.
Thanks Frank for the photos. this piece I am talking about was connecting the eye strap on the bottom of the furler to the tang on the stem fitting on the bow. I can't imagine why.... I need to replace it with something more substantial. I think after perusing the west marine site I have found the toggle that I need. On your second photo, is the pelican hook attached to the anchor roller just holding the furling sock cover, or is that something else? Thanks for your help, Cheers, Scott
