I have just bought my first sailboat. I feel like a nine-year old. In a good way.

I sailed a lot on Great Lakes in 80's, as a teenager. The only thing I ever truly loved to do that was physical activity. I mean, bsides that other thing.

And then life happened. You all know the drill on that. Having a boat of my own became just a dream.

Then in May, my best friend died suddenly. Some of you know that drill too - you think to yourself, life is short, and the important things might not be as important as you thought they were, and the little things become huge.

So I buy a 1981 Catalina 25. And am right back at the Cobourg Yacht Club, where it all started in 1984. Excited like a nine year old.

Now, I need to relearn certain things. Like how to dock, and a host of other things I never needed to know when I was a twenty something crew member on Northern 40's, Mirage 30's and Hinterhollers.

Is there someone in the area of Westbrook, Saybrook, Clinton etc. that would be interested in helping me start to re-gain my sea legs with this boat?

I am happy to pay someone to go over the key things, but I am also interested in perhaps tradinng knowledge. My skills for yours? Shared passions in sailing, but different things to bring to it. Know what I mean?

Some ideas -

I am a pretty good (trained, but amateur) photographer and can photograph you on your boat, under sail, etc.

I currently work in the art world as a curator, and can spend a day with you at a museum, buy you lunch, and teach you what to say at gallery openings, or when cocktail conversation gets artsy. Want to impress someone with inside knowledge of the art world? I am your man.

Or I can repay you in grunt labor, helping you with your boat chores.

Or, finally, I can pay you in cash.

Thoughts?

And if I have broken a rule by posting this in the forums, I apologize.

Send me message directly....

Now? It's getting brisk!

I've been sailing for over 60 years but don't consider myself a technician (e.g. racer). I am, however, retired a half hour from you, and pass through on the Ho Chi Minh Trail most Mondays around noon...

Hey there Dave - I've read a lot of your posts and already learned a great deal from you!

The boat is still in the water now. I am learning (as fast as I can) about what it needs for winterization, and what I will need to do to it over winter. But then in spring, can I take you up on your offer?

I am in West Hartford and can come down almost any time. If you are ever up this way, let me know.

As to the trade? What'll it be - food, booze, art vocab, laundry, lawn cutting?

I'll take this deal and improve. Beer + entree (with or without gravy) PLUS coffee at Boom, AND give you some skinny on The Whitney.

Just say when!

This is the best kind of social networking, not in silico on the internet, as they say, but rather in fiberglass and dacron on the water!

It's really cool!

It started in a bed-sheet square rig on a flat-bottomed rowboat, with two pine leeboards and an oarlock on the transom. It could almost make a beam reach... I'll be passing through Westbrook Monday, probably a little before noon. Then things are pretty open for the next three days--I live about a half hour from Pilot's Point. I'll sent you an e-mail with my cell# and we can work something out.
