My '81 has two batteries in a compartment under the starboard settee wired through the fuse box to a trolling motor plug which is mounted on a bulkhead between the fuel and sail lockers on the port side. The plug has been problematic. Can I just straight wire the outboard to the battery cables coming into the plug and eliminate the plug entirely? Or is there a better way to connect them. Thanks.
On Passage, Stinkpotter David Bristle mounted a double brass terminal strip with two lugs inside the aft most portion of the quarterberth. The battery cables come up underneath the Q'berth and the engine cables pass through a rubber gland mounted to the transom. Both sets of cables have crimped on cable lugs and they are held in place by thumb screw nuts with split washers. Very secure but easy to release end of season or whenever I need to pull the engine. Dave is one classy guy!
What kind of motor plug do you have? I have never had a problem with mine, even when the starter button on my last motor failed and shorted the battery through the switch. The insulation on the motor cable smoked and melted, but the plug was undamaged and re-used.
