I'm refinishing Outlier's brightwork. After sanding down to bare wood, here are the results after one coat of regular Cetol.
Sikkens recommends three coats initially, but I've seen how some folks dislike how they cannot see the grain of the wood very well due to the pigment. So it occurs to me to use fewer coats. Has anyone experimented with less than the recommended number of coats? If so, how'd it last?
I'm showing "image not available" in English and 7 other languages where your photo should be. I'm almost through refinishing the exterior wood on our C-22, using teak oil, 3 coats. Will try to post pics when I'm done.
Cetol comes in a variety of tints from very light translucent to solid stain. Different finishes too. So I reckon the answer (as in many things) is "it depends".
I have used it for quite a few years and I would say you can expect the coating to last about one year for every good coat you apply. If you apply thin coats I would lower that estimation to about six months per coat. So I guess it depends on how often you want to reapply. I put about five thick coats on mine about four years ago and it is now starting to show the need for touch up. The environment you are in will also affect how long it will last and whether you cover the boat or not. I do have a cover I use that covers the wood and the (<font size="1">enter your choice of choice words here</font id="size1">) leaky windows. So the experiences of others will differ dependent on which variables apply.
I think Cetol is an amazing product. I really agree with Joe. I've applied 4 or 5 coats of each (natural teak and gloss) back in 2010 and it still looks like new. I just have few areas on the teak on the companionway to touch up - but it's mostly from tossing lines down below.
