Hi Fellow Catalina-25 Sailors, I have to replace the wires going from my motor electric start junction box to the battery. I am wondering what gauge wire I should use? The span runs under the aft berth to the battery compartment under the starboard settee in the cabin. I'm thinking about 10ft.?
BTW_The junction box I refer to is a something I made to connect the electric start wires from the motor to the wire cable running to the battery. There are bolt posts with nuts.

Cate, The wire gauge will depend on the load (in amps) that it'll be carrying. In general bigger (smaller number gauge) is better. Longer runs require thicker wire. You should be able to figure out what your starting amperage is from your outboard's manual, or failing that, borrow a clamp-on ammeter from your local car parts store & get an actual reading. From there you can use this table to help figure out what gauge you need for your run.
I don't think I'd use anything of lesser diameter than 8 gauge multi-stranded marine grade wire, and would probably choose 6 or 4 gauge, especially since the cost isn't going to be great with that short of a run.
