I have recently purchased a Catalina 250 and prepping to launch her for the first time. As I bought the boat in Californian and transported up to Oregon, I didn't get to see the boat rigged completely.

I'd love to see or hear how you guys have the following rigged. I feel there are some pieces missing and things that don't seem right.

The roller furling forestay as it attached to chainplate?

The main sheet attachment - seems to be missing hardware on boom.

I could also use some advice on proper mooring setup. I will be leaving the boat on a mooring buoy this summer.

Any pics would be super helpful

If others have used a quick pin at the forestay without problems, I'll defer that it might be ok... but I chose not to. A quick pin can suffer a sticky locking mechanism or the shackle can wear slightly over a long time. The forestay staying connected keeps the mast up... there is no redundancy for it with the furler. Perhaps that is just my conservative nature regarding sailing or the tougher sailing conditions chosen.

The hole under the boom is where the mainsheet block connects via a shackle at the hole.

At the aft end of the boom... it looks like the mainsail halyard is temporarily connected to the outhaul as a makeshift topping lift. Perhaps there is no topping lift rigged. At any rate, the pigtail pictured looks like it could be the outhaul and will be made to the mainsail clew and the halyard of course will be needed on the mainsail. If that is the topping lift... it is way overkill size wise.

That leaves the need for a topping lift as IMO one is a necessity. There are several ways to rig one and I'll leave that for your research or another question.

btw, congrats on becoming a 250 owner...enjoy the boat.

Ooops, forgotten was to comment on what you are thinking is a mast raising shackle at the stem. It is not typical of either of Catalina's systems they offered for the 250 so might be an add on for an A frame raising system or it could be there for other reasons such as for use with a drifter down haul. Or...it could be your missing clevis from the main sheet tackle.

I'm with Arlyn. I wouldn't want a quick release anything holding up my mast. I don't have a clue what the other thing is but my mast raising system doesn't attach to the stem plate.

Mooring setup
Jared...I don't know your experience but following are a few tips we've learned over the years. Your choices will depend on how protected your mooring is with regard wind and waves. Most boats in our mooring field and size range use double 1/2" pennants or a single 5/8" pennant. Our field is well protected but big winds often show up near end of the season. Our mooring owner discourages use of a swivel between the pennant and the mooring ball claiming they are a weak link, but I disagree. Unless you check your boat almost daily, a suitably sized swivel will keep the pennant(s) from twisting or tangling and over the past 10 years we've never had a problem. Wear after 1-2 seasons anyway is not visible on the swivel but on the shackle pin attached to the ball. We use a single 5/8" pennant but add a second 1/2" line during big winds, e.g. Irene. I recommend use of three-strand nylon with a mooring snubber to lessen the shock of wave action but some of our neighbors use double braid. These snubbers require you weave the line through them before splicing in an eye. Finished length of our pennant with thimble, 10" eye and snubber is about 11'. Pennant lengths for boats on Hazzelett moorings (mooring field next to ours) tend to be about 1' shorter. Our local Ace Hardware makes them up for significantly less than available online. I also recommend use of a stainless-steel thimble in the pennant. They wear far better than galvanized and will outlast the pennant (unlike the galvanized) so that they can be used again and again. Try to bring the pennant directly over the bow if possible, e.g., through the anchor roller or use a bridle to keep the boat from hunting too badly. We've not had any chaffing issues (above the water) but always keep an eye on things. The only chaffing issues we had below water was with the galvanized thimble once it began to show wear. Not sure how the bow cleats are arranged on a C250 but do use a small line (1/4") to secure the pennant eye on the cleat. Also secure all shackles in your system with stainless steel seizing wire or double zip-lock ties (easier to snip off in cold waters). A pick-up buoy will make coming and going much easier. We chose a 4' one thinking getting it through the pulpit and storing it on deck would be easier, but in hindsight 6' would be easier to pick up. We added 3M reflective tape to the pick-up mast to make finding it easier after dark. Have fun.
