Last season I damaged my rudder. Exactly how I'm not sure. I didn't hit anything, but was blown over in a storm and I think that may have been when it happened. I have a vertical crack between the pentels and some other minor cracks where the pentels attach to the rudder. I think those are just normal wear and tear. I've had an estimate for fiberglass repairs and I can buy a new Catalina Direct rudder cheaper, but it's not the exact rudder from Catalina (fiberglass)this one is made from HDPE. Their claim is it is better than the original. My boat is a 2006 250 WK with pedestal steering. Has anyone replaced their rudders with Catalina direct, if so are you satisfied? Has anyone replaced their rudder with a Catalina rudder like the original design? Any feed back would be helpful to make my buying rudder decision. Thanks Dan
I purchased a Catalina rudder a couple of years ago. The build quality was poor and I sent it back. The second unit they sent was also poorly shaped. I then ordered the HDPE rudder from IdaSailor (CD nows sells them) and have been very happy with it. I have wheel steering on my 2000 C250WK.
Thanks for your response and information. How has the Oregon sailing been this spring? My lake is still frozen over and the water level is very low. The high country has received normal snow pack this year so hopefully we'll have some water to launch the boat.
Sounds exactly like the problem I had with my rudder, cracks like that in the same area. I never damaged it, the cracks just appeared. I had it repaired 2 years ago and have had no problem since. I posted pics so they may still be somewhere on the board.

No sailing yet. Beautiful DRY weather all year so far. Setting new records for lack of rainfall and, as a result, our lake is not filling up.
I broke my rudder last year , I would lean towards replacing it , if it looks ify . it was not fun coming in with no rudder , and you know it wont break on a calm day ...
the original rudder has no reinforcement inside its just fiberglass so if the inside glass is cracking i would replace , if it just gel coat cracks it might be only cosmetic .
i called Catalina direct , plus called IDA , I was concerned about the replacement being 12 wide verses 16 like the original .. IDA made one 16 plus a little deeper , i'm real happy with it better control and feel over the original .
Catalina Direct is a great company i bought the gongens and pindles from them .
Has anyone tried the blue water version from idasailor? My boat has what I believe is an original rudder. It's puffy here and roundups aren't as rare as I'd like. Wondering if perhaps that big blue water rudder wouldn't have better grip.
