Hi All
Does any body knows how often the 4 bolts that holds the centerboard should be remove/change in a Catalina 250 MKII. I remember I read and article months ago that you have to change every 3 years this bolts to avoid a mayor work if they get rusted in the future. Any advice

Hi Sam, welcome to the Forum, and the Association.

I'm curious to hear where you read 'change every 3 years', that would seem way overkill for our 2005 boat (Mk1)

What year is your boat and where do you keep it (fresh / salty), that would impact the life of the keel bolts.

I'm pretty sure (7 year old memory) that our bolts are bronze. But we keep JD on the trailer between 'voyages'.

Hi Paul,

I have a Catalina 250 MKII WB - 2010, Sail # 998. I have her in Costa Rica in salt water in average 5 days per month. I think that in my case bolts are not in bronze. seems to me they are in stainless steel.

I read in Catalina Direct that in a Catalina 25 retractable keel you should change bolts every 2 years. When they get rusted is very difficult to take them out. Bellow the link.

Comments!!

Good find Sam!

I'll drop the bolts on JD this weekend and report back.

Sam, the Catalina 25 Swing Keel and the Catalina 250 water ballast with centerboard are 2 very, very different boats. The hardware on the swing keel supports 1500 pounds of cast iron. The hardware on the centerboard in your boat only supports around 100 pounds.

Your reference to the Catalina Direct item is for keel bolts for a conventional (NOT SWING) keel.

Hi John and Paul,

Agree that weight is a difference, but rust is not related to weight and maybe after 5 years this bolts will get so rusted you will end making a mayor repair if you do not change them every 2 years. Lets wait for Paul's report on the status of this bolts on his sailing boat this weekend.

If there positioned like a C250 why not just change them and be done with it? 10 minute job on a C250. At the beginning of our season I do go under and put a socket on my 4 to make sure there tight. JMTCW
