Sailed over to St Petersburg for their First Night, New years Eve celebration. Snapped a couple of photos, but didn't think to take any of the fireworks...
Our approach to the St Pete Pier, which may be one of the last, as it is scheduled to be closed and torn down later this year.
Tied up at the St Pete Municiple dock:

Was an interesting way to spend New Years. Will probably try to do it again next year as St Pete put on a pretty good show.

One of the major networks stated that only 3% of the population goes out to celebrate new years. I like your choice the best!
Removing/replacing that ugly pier can only improve the skyline!

What??? You don't like the Pier? I just hope they replace it with something worthwhile and not exclusive.
I spent a few New Year's at the Pier watching fireworks, will agree with Dave, St Pete puts on a nice show. Great sunrise shots, best time of the morning. What do they charge for an overnight stay?
I had to work New Year's eve, at least the weather was good and had a decent crowd at the Tiki Bar. I did get out for a New Year's day sail.
Beautiful pics. I'm sorry to read that it will be torn down. I was at college in St. Pete when the previous building was razed and the inverse pyramid building was built. Very modern design for its time.

However, there is currently a lawsuit that may have some impact. They are trying to force the city to rebuild. Otherwise, it will close in May.

I’m in the camp that believes that there will not be as much to do at the “new” pier. The new design, to me, looks like an oversized jogging track. The current pier has multiple restaurants, shops, bars, bands playing at various locations, an aquarium display and even a place to rent a fishing pole if you want to try your luck. Now that they have removed the boat dock from the plans it has even less appeal.
<hr height="1" noshade id="quote"></font id="quote"></blockquote id="quote">OK, I'll admit, the new design is extremely cool, but I'm still gonna mourn the passing of the old inverse pyramid. It was the first marina that I stopped at on my first cruise ever. (I'm also still mourning the passing of Crosley Field, Riverfront Stadium and the Bounty replica.)
I'm sorry... Looking at those artist renditions, I've got to say, the inverted pyramid looks great. What a new age piece of crap waste of money. Maybe I'm just getting old.
I have mixed feelings about the pier. I was at the Harborage Marina for some time and frequently went to the pier. It is an old structure and the cost to shore it up is almost as much to replace it. The biggest problem is that parking is hard, and the whole thing is off the beaten Beach Drive program. The aquarium is gone. The Columbia restaurant is a crappy restaurant with very inflated prices for less than average food, and the base bar is old and antiquated. The winery left, so candles and knicknacs are all that is left. I agree, leaving out dockage sucks, but if you saw the current situation you would understand. I think the new design is cool, and might be a draw... So I'm in, but I do think the pier is cool.
