Today Rita & I went down to prep the boat for winter. Just as we were getting ready to leave, I went up the cabin ladder to start moving stuff to the dock while Rita handed the various things up to me. As she got ready to exit the cabin herself, she noticed the starboard was barely holding on by half a thread and the ladder itself was wobbly. I'm actually a bit embarrassed that I didn't notice this, but I'm really glad she did. The bolt fell into her hand when she rattled the ladder. When she checked the port bolt, it was loose as well, but still all the way home, just not tight. She got the bolt well started into it's bracket & I came back down into the cabin to help her get a big screwdriver on it to tighten it up as well as the port one. I'm not sure how the first bolt got so loose, but figured I'd pass on the story. I don't think the ladder would have dropped even with one bolt completely out since the other was still solidly in, but taking a tumble onto the deck of the cabin doesn't sound like fun to me.

3 years ago, I picked up # 411. A 250 wing, tall mast. The 1st thing I did was to go over all bolts on the trailer, As it went to Ne. (1300 miles). I can tell you I'm glad I did.
Once home, I went after the bolts and screws on the boat, all of them!! If I were to say that 30% were loose, and That mite be low.
I would say to anyone, if you have never done this to your boat, ITS TIME. But also keep in mine the word TORQUE !! If, One does not know what the TORQUE on a bolt or nut is, then remember, Snug is better than broken.
