I also loath inverters. Had one catch fire in the car once. They produce a poor representation of a sine wave, and if you plug in electronic adapters you get noisy 12v. You're much better off just staying at 12v and using car adapters. There's no electric supply as pure as 12v DC right off the battery, especially when you're sailing so you don't have noise from the alternator.

For conversion to USB, I've been very happy with this thing from WalMart. It gives me 2 usbs, and also extra 12V outlets that you can plug more USB adapters into if you want to. All this for only $9:

EDIT: If you go into a Walmart, you may have a hard time finding this. It is in the automotive department, usually with the iPhone accessories.

Ross - just curious...what is the price difference between scattered outlets and a dedicated 30a plug?

As an aside to all this...

Following relocation to the new club, I have not yet been able to plug in the boat this year. The new club has 20 amp twist-lock power at teh docks, and does not allow 15 amp extension cords. A 20 amp to 30 amp shore power cord is being crafted once I get the time and parts and energy to come together.

In the meantime my boat sits. The interesting thing is that so far this season my batteries have only gone from 13.5 down to 12.6 volts. Hardly any loss considering they haven't been charged since early May.

Compared to what you probably have to pay back east, it is probably peanuts. There are essentially 3 options on our lake. The cheapest is a 20x10 uncovered with sporadically spaced 110 outlets and it is $790/year. The middle options is 25x20, double occupancy and runs $1350 per side (with 30A twist-locks), and the nicest option is $1580 for a 12x30 private slip with 30A, water, and cable TV. Of course, power is metered and billed separately on all 3 options, but one of the guys on the dock at the low cost option indicated that the power meter hasn't worked in twenty years and he has never got a separate bill. :)

Wow! That's $132 a month for a sweet deal.....Even if you financed your boat, you could have a really sweet lake place for $500 a month......

Ross,
Is your town pronounced Spoke-AINE or Spoke-ANN?
Just curious.

Spoke-AINE, Mizz-oo-rah. I'm originally from Kansas, but that is pronunciation I have acquired from the natives.
