Can anyone offer a recommendation for a good, economical rigger in the Annapolis area? I have my 1985 Catalina 25 TR docked in Edgewater and noticed that one of my lower swages is bent. I had some of the standing rigging replaced a couple of years ago so I suspect I don't need a full overhaul but I would like to get everything looked at and have the weaker bits replaced. Any recommendations would be helpful.

I've done my own rigging on the Gypsy, but in your area there are quite a number of rigging experts. Here are 3 of them:

West Marine Rigging Service

Atlantic Spars & Rigging
122 Severn Ave
Annapolis, MD

M Yacht Services

Annapolis, MD

I never did business with any of them, but a friend had some rigging work done by Atlantic Spars & Rigging, and he liked them.

Appreciate the suggestions. If I had the time, I'd do it myself but have several other little projects that I've got on my list.

I have standing rigging replacement on my list and might wind up calling Atlantic eventually...but probably not this year. Some of the Annapolis riggers have mobile services and so I may be able to utilize one of them. The local free sailboat magazine "Spinsheet" is generally available at marinas that have sailboats and it has advertisements from addl riggers located in the Cheseapeake/Annapolis region.

Call a few surveyors... They know the deal as they will have to stand behind whoever does the work...

I just replaced my entire rig using "The Rigging Shoppe" in Toronto (http://www.riggingshoppe.com/index.htm).

What do you want to have teh riggers do? lower the mast, full inspection, rebuild, replace, raise mast? If so I am of no help to you, however if you are looking for someone to just build the bits you need, they treated me well. I put the rig back together myself, and will be raising the mast tonight or tomorrow.

FWIW, Rigging shoppe built my new rig for $600 - no shipping (local pickup). I will be replacing the backstay next year, but everything else is new including turnbuckles, T-bolts, etc. If it is just a T-bolt that bent you can buy a single replacement. If it is a swaged stud that bent, you will need to replace the shroud.

I could send you the best of my used shrouds, but I cannot make any guarantee on any of the parts that came off the boat. If you want to discuss this, fire me off an email. cpotvin73 at gmail.com
