Food poison. Out on the boat with 2 ladies. I had the fried Tilefish slaw and potato salad for lunch at 12. Sudden onset severe stomach pain at 6pm. Weakness and hurl. Sarah had to pull anchor and secure the boat while I headed for the marina showers. Freezing with blankets on the way home.

Pretty scary... I had forgotten how bad that can be. Onset was destinctive pain in stomach which got really bad really fast. Pale and completely drained likeno strength. Should have acted sooner to get back even though it was my immediate thought that this was food poisoning. Swam to shore at anchor...sudden pain..swam back and climbed aboard and bent over and hurled over the side.

I'm just so tired of the fries.....

Ouch, hope you're on the mend now. Gatorade can be your friend to get your electrolyte levels back up after all the fluid loss.

I've had food poisoning a couple of times and it's beyond miserable. Last time I had it I was down & out for about three days. Seafood gumbo from one of the "best" restaurants in Olympia, WA. Onset was about 8-9 hours later. If I remember correctly a number of people got sick and the restaurant was closed down for a while. The funny thing was, my friend who ate with me, was fine.

Yepper.. we have all kinds of training on the electrolyte stuff... grlfrnd is training for a full ironman in Oct. and we have both been runners/bikers/swimers for years. We've even gotten drops of stuff we add to our water, we joke is our EPO. Stuff works.

She and a group of 5 finished a 67 mile bike ride yesterday in 106 degree heat and said it was not pleasant, but amazing what they can do. They started late cause someone got lost to the start. I would have bailed with that predicted heat. 30 miles max.

Management of food poisoning is always so strange. You think you could take something to make you feel better, but you are better off getting everything out of your body. I normally keep ginger ale onboard but we were out. I've got phenergan in the first aid kit which would have stopped the nausea, but might have killed me by keeping the bacteria in me. I drank water ( we did not have any electrolites onboard ) and the water caused me to throw up more, which is what I wanted to happen. The shock part after that ( getting really cold ) was scary. Then I could have used an IV and some anti-emetics.

I'm back up to near normal now, that was Saturday, and feeling rather light after a day of rest. Wearing my "small" pants now. Adding to list of onboard supplies, ginger ale and gatorade. Hmmm or better yet..for storage reasons our EPO.

A few months back, Sail Magazine featured a story about husband and wife cruisers who caught and ate a fish that had ingested a tropical algae containing a neuro-toxin. First mate got sick first while the captain held up for a longer time.
They had some activated charcoal pills that could be used to absorb the toxins and make them pass harmlessly through your system. Trouble was they didn't realize what had happened until it was too late.
I had never heard of those pills before but thought they might work for food poisoning as well.
