My question should have been does the replacement turning ball assembly eliminate the need for a 800# gorilla to raise the centerboard? I have read enough info on the forum to change the system.
After looking at the factory setup, I noticed it's inefficiency.
Looking at the replacement turning ball assembly (and the instructions for using it) I don't see any reason for my mod to be any different.
Basically I changed the blocks and tackle from under the companion bridge deck so that pulling on the line from the cockpit does not turn on a block at the back of the steps and increased the purchase.
I can take pics of it this weekend and post them to my blog.
Sam, Make certain that the fiberglass tube for your centerboard cable terminates outside (aft) of the step box. This is easy to determine...just check your hose clamps. If they are outside the box you are good to go...if they are inside the box the stainless cassette that holds the turning balls will be too long.. If that is the case you will NOT be able to use the Centerboard Turning Kit, http://www.catalinadirect.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&product_ID=2360 , sold by both Catalina Direct and Catalina to retrofit the glassed in ball at the bottom of the centerboard tube. Also, be careful to NEVER remove the tube while the boat is in the water unless you want a fountain in your cabin. I'm not certain why there is no notification on the Catalina Direct Website regarding this potential nightmare unless they are not aware that Catalina changed the design of the tube. Why this tube was shortened I will never understand as IMHO it's a real potential problem. You can glass or epoxy a fiberglass extension to the tube but it is really problematic as the boat has to be either on a sling or really high jackstands to do it. Willy
