Fellow sailors: Greetings from St Helens where the Columbia River is running fast! I am in a quandry as I have been stuck with an internal debate. I looked at a 86 Newport 30 III and have really gotten stung with the need to move up. The boat is very traditional in layout and the interior is beautiful with 6’3” of headroom. I really enjoy sailing my 250 WK but would like the extra room so I struggle with what to do. Should I spend a few boating dollars on my 250 for a nice Bimini or should I save those dollar to move up? Help..... Craig
No doubt you know that a 26-year-old, 30' boat with inboard diesel, larger rig and sails, and various systems (hot water, refrigeration, etc.) will require multiples of the work and expense to maintain that a six-year-old 25' boat does. I'm confident you know that, and that you're weighing it all in your decision process...
Don: ;-) Just trying to convince the wife! It is a beautiful boat. Have been reading a Newport 30 blog and hands down the owners really love the boat, its confort and easy of sail. None have mentioned any problems with the core and very few have had any problems with minor blisters.
wow! nice boat. The T/H floor and all the woodworksure make a much "richer" interior that Catalina provides. We like the Catalina, don't get me wrong, and will likely move up to a Catalina 30 ourselves as soon as finances allow. but all other things aside, the interior of Catalina lacks for passion.
Go for it! I've always thought that if you can be in the water all or most of the year that it makes sense to go bigger than 25'. Those five feet make a world of difference in accommodations.
I often tell people a 30' sailboat is effectively double the size of a 25-footer, and a 25 is double a 22. (The C-30's displacement is more than double the C-25's.)
