I just bought a 1984 FK TR (I think...I asked about this on the main forum) which needs a new mainsail.
If anyone has a used mainsail for a TR in Seattle I'd be interested in it. I'm mostly looking for something to get me through the summer before I order a new one (or even through a few weeks until a new one is able to get to me). The current main sale is in very rough shape.
thanks, alex

Hi Alex: Welcome & congratulations with your new boat. Be patient, check the previous posts by doing a search for sails on the swap meet. They come around pretty often. Ask your seller for good photos and some of the seasoned salts can tell by the photos if they are worth considering.
Although finding the right sail locally may be a challenge. I found a good <i>furling head sail </i> from a former C25 owner, on Craigs list for a negotiated $175, in New Jersey, that would have cost less than $15 to ship parcel post. But my seller decided he didn't like the USPS and sent the sail COD in an over sized box via United Parcel Service that cost me another $50. He wasn't that concerned since shipping was on me. In hind sight I shouldn't have agreed to it, or said I would only pay half of the shipping. If I hadn't been so anxious, I could have been more patient and frugal. Most of the time you are in a buyer's market when searching for used sails for a C25 TR. Doug
There are also used sail shops around. Write down the sail dimensions for the TR, then check those used sail shops regularly (in addition to the aforementioned Craigslist).
Assuming you plan to keep the boat more than just a few years, invest in a new main, not a used one.
Meanwhile, call Sail Care in Ford City, PA (1-800-433-7245) about your current sail. They do good work refurbishing sails, and if you send it to them they will tell you if it is too far gone before working on it. Cleaning and their refurbishing process will cost you about $125. Repairs like replacing telltales, sewing, etc. will be a bit more but it should gain you a year or two out of the sail.
If you do have a tall rig, do not intend to race the boat, and do intend to sail with a bimini up, consider buying a Capri 25 main sail. It is only a foot shorter than the tall rig main and that will give you more room for a taller bimini.
Regarding new sails, many here on the forum swear by Gary <s>Ullman</s> Swenson at Ullman Sails in Ventura, CA as being one of the most knowledgable about Catalina sails, but there are quite a few who are also good, such as North Sails, Doyle, FX and others at the higher end. Gus Sails and Waters Sails both make quality sails (Waters sails are used extensively in Catalina 22 racing). For moderately priced imported sails, look to National Sail Supply (they advertize in the Catalina Mainsheet magazine), Island Planet Sails, or The Sail Warehouse. I've had good experiences with all three of these.
Also, ask around for a good sailmaker in the Seattle area.
I very carefully measured the mast (height and width) and my mainsail yesterday and verified that I do have the tall rig.
I think I'll look into a temporary repair job on my current sail and order a new mainsail to start out the season. Ullman appears to have a local loft, perhaps I'll start with them (North Sails also has a local loft).
