Karma only has one battery located under he starboard setee. I would like to add a second battery but the current location is not big enough for two because of the fresh water tank.

I'm looking for suggestions on where to install the second battery. I don't mind doing the extra work to move both if that's the right thing to do. I would rather do it right than do it fast.

Any recommendations?

Tom

Perhaps put them behind the ladder like the later models?

I seem to recall a discussion before about putting them in the forward bilge (under the V-berth). The idea was to help push some of the weight forward, thus allowing the boat to ride (slightly) more level when people were in the cockpit.

that's some cash running that line forward. and having the weight to the ends of the boat.

I'd put them behind the ladder, under the aft bunk.

Two standard batteries (auto battery size) fit in my battery compartment also. However, I doubt if it would hold 2 of the larger deep cycle batteries. I would not try to place them under the v-berth on my boat because it is already a little bit bow heavy. If you don't have an inboard motor, perhaps that space would work.

As I recall when looking in the compartment under the settee I had a mental note that there was enough room for a second battery if I wanted to install one in the future and this is with my water pump being mounted to the wall for the water tank. My battery faces port to starboard. If yours is facing for to aft It might not look like you have the room.

There's no reason they need to be together. Just put one behind the ladder, or under the port seat, or in the v-berth, or in the dumpster. ;)

My two 27 deep cycles just fit - there would be no room for a pump at the end.

Don't be too jealous the traditional model has dual batteries high and dry on under the fore-aft port dinette seat. On the port side is also the head, the sink/ice chest, the stove/oven, and propane locker. I sit about 3/4" freeboard inch lower port.

If you store the batteries behind the ladder under the quarterberth area, it is an area that you are not likely to utilize for storage. The area under the VBerth is a nice large area that could be more appealing for storage of extra life preservers or belongings when making overnighters except for the transducers, wires to them and the seacock that is located in that area. But a future project could make the area under the VBerth more appealing for storage by isolating those elements with a compartment that also doubles as a shelf:

I know this depends a lot on the expected load, but if the batteries were relocated to the V-berth, what gauge cable would be needed?

My 82' has a battery compartment under the starboard settee. It fits 2 batteries just fine. Plus helps even out the load. Mine is a swiinger and has limited room behind the steps due to the cable going down through that area. (Plus the bilge pump and 2 transducers)
P.S. I opted for the AGMs becuase there are no fumes in the living quarters that way.
