are the through hulls sold by CD real Marelon? they don't mention the name, just "glass reinforced nylon" sounds like Marelon, are they just some sort of imitation? (i've searched this forum and wrote to CD to no avail)
There are many brands and formulations of glass reinforced nylon, including different formulations of Marelon, for different applications. Buying from a reputable supplier should get you a quality product regardless of brand.
Couple of years back I purchased a 3/4 in. ball valve from Catalina Direct and used only the top half of it to replace half of the original-equipment valve that the P.O. had buggered up with the wrong size (tapered-, not straight-thread) nipple and a glob of epoxy.
This was on the through-hull for raw-water intake to the diesel's heat exchanger.
It fit perfectly. If the CD part isn't Marelon like from Forespar, it's a dead ringer for it.
I have yet to see or hear of one instance where CD's products were not just about as good as you can (reasonably) get. (I may have missed something... ) Obviously they don't make them, but they select them, and they're sailors who know what they're doing and know our boats. In the cases of a few OEM items they offer, they even say why they think an alternative is better. Their prices are reasonable--not cheap... IMHO, it all correlates.
Forespar is an excellent company to deal with. I called then directly and bought through hulls that were for sale to OEMs only. They had no problem selling them to me and provided me with all the info I needed to install them. I glued them in with 5200 as recommended. They will never leak or come out. They are re-buildable without removing them. Excellent product.
i wish they'd give more details about why they don't call it Marelon, is that term exclusive to Forespar? maybe they just order their parts from Forspar...
