I was inspired by the Nauti Duck Folding Helmsman Seat. So I purchased the same “Fighting Chair”, it was on sale in an open box at West Marine. As I inspected the chair I wanted to take a different approach to building my Helmsman’s seat (<i>I want to avoid buying the Edson pieces for $80, and I ended up spending more money and certainly more time on my design</i>).
I wanted to utilize the ladder catches on the ends of the tubes. So the first order of business was to cut the extension flush with the backside of the chair and have the nipple ends of the ladder catches pressed back into the newly shortened tubes. I mounted a piece of teak across the back of the backrests stainless steel tube. I am not a big fan of drilling holes unnecessarily especially if I was unsure if my design was sound. I found these plastic rail cleats and used the plastic rail pieces to mount the teak to the rails. So far so good, however the ladder catches with their mounting holes were slightly too big to fit between the rails. So I removed the seat cushion (staple by staple) removed about 1 inch of SS from the center of the SS “U” that supports the seat. I drilled new holes to mount the rail to the seat bottom and reattached the seat cushion and cover.
All in all a nice upgrade, if I had to do it again I may go the Nauti Duck Folding Helmsman route. Comfortable, great lineof site. I need to add my ladder latch back.
Thanks Phil
