I have a cradle for my boat, but hate working on the bottom when she is sitting in it. Is there any compelling reason to use a cradle vs. jack stands for a SK boat? Obviously, I can't rest the boat on her keel, so the hull contact points would bear all the weight. Is this bad??

I would expect that the cradle would be more secure than jack stands. Once the boat is on the cradle, lower the keel onto a block of wood. Then the pads are supporting primarily the weight of the hull. I have a fixed keel trailer (six 1x1 pads)and have the same issue.

Jackstands would be nice for specific bottom work, but a cradle offers better security and weight distribution for anything else. Lower and support the keel separately regardless of the hull support system.

There's a guy here who used jack stands to raise his boat up off his trailer . . .

I may be that guy : )
We used stands to take the pressure off the rollers so we could drop them enough to fix blisters and do bottom paint. We tried to keep the keel supported as much as possible. I thought it worked well. Of course, you have to have an adjustable trailer to pull it off. There may be some detailed shots here

Thanks for all the great pix Josh . . . maybe JimGo will see these and gain even more incentive!

Using jackstands in conjunction with the cradle will be even easier as you won't have wheels, fenders, axles, etc. to work around . . .

OJ, it's funny that you'd mention me in this thread. I've been focusing more on my search for a boat, and haven't really looked at the tales of work that's been done to the various boats. But I was poking around a bit and saw the thread title, and figured I'd give it a read - and was very surprised to see my name!

Josh, Genevieve is a beauty! You've done some great work. I'll have to search for the threads you've started so I can get a feel for what all you've done.

Pat, sorry to have hijacked your thread (I blame OJ). Thanks for asking a very good question!

I agree with Pat. A good threadjack is the best substitute for shooting the breeze in a harbor with another sailor. It's much more true to life!
