No apology required. I figured that if your email was hacked it might be easier to contact you here, especially if you didn't know it. My anti-virals picked it up immediately.
I'm still trying to figure out how it happened. I studiously avoid physhing attempts, and have what is supposed to be pretty robust protection... The implications go way beyond e-mail--kinda scary.
It seems to be happening to everyone with a mainstream email account (Hotmail, gmail, etc.) When mine went south, the password on it was reset so that I couldn't even get back into it to recover my contacts and let folks know. It is scary.
I think I got lucky... A bro-in-law notified me he had received his "present" from me within 10-15 minutes of it being sent. I was logged it at the time, and immediately changed the password--possibly right before the attacker tried to. Most other people I know who've had this happen also lost access, and some found later that all of their contacts had be wiped out. This is an AT&T account I've had since the very start of their internet service, when I switched from Prodigy. Thus the simple ID, which turns out to attract a lot of spam.
I still feel like I've been burgled, with no signs of forced entry...
